.woodwardnews.net/articles/2005/02/27
OKLAHOMA CITY - On a historic day at the state wrestling championships, two Woodward athletes earned medals.
Senior Matt Johnson got the silver medal at 160 pounds and freshman Joey Miller was fourth at 103 pounds. Miller was the first female wrestler to compete, win a match and medal at the state championships Saturday in the State Fair Arena.
Cody Rowell of Duncan pinned Johnson with just 21 seconds left in the 160-pound championship match. It was the third state title for Rowell, while Johnson medaled for the third time.
Johnson finished the year with a 40-4 record, including a 1-2 mark against Rowell.
Miller got into the medal round with a 9-0 win over Shane Webb of Noble on Saturday morning.
In the third place match, Miller met Chris Crawford of El Reno for the second time in the tournament and was pinned for the second time. Crawford got the fall in 2:31.
Senior Kevin Branine also qualified for state, but was eliminated on Friday.

Cheers
To wrestlers Antwan Anderson of Capitol Hill and Joey Miller of Woodward.
Anderson is Capitol Hill's first state champ since 1939. At a school void of resources or a support program, Anderson's success is amazing. Here's hoping Anderson gets a shot at a scholarship.
Miller, who placed fourth at 103 pounds in Class 4A, is the first girl state wrestling placer. Competing is one thing for girl wrestlers; succeeding is another

Joey Miller (left), a Woodward High School 103-pound weight class wrestler, escapes a wrestling hold during warm-upsy.
Joey Miller might just change what may be a young male athletes biggest humiliation losing to a girl.
The Woodward freshmans 30-6 record and No. 5 ranking in Class 4A at 103 pounds is testament shes a trailblazer among girl wrestlers in the state.
Just dont call her a girl wrestler.
Im a wrestler who just happens to be a girl, said Miller before receiving a forfeit in a dual with Enid Thursday at Mark Price Arena. I dont want to be treated any different. Ive gotten where I am by working hard.
Woodward coach Greg Johnson hasnt cut her any slack since she started in the sport at age 5 after her brother gave her a pair of wrestling shoes for Christmas.
He figured I would quit, but I didnt, said Miller with a smile.
Shes just another wrestler, Johnson said. I dont care what you look like if you want to work, she steps up there to win ... if you step out on the mat you better be ready to wrestle or youre going to lose.
Enid coach Shane Kerr said the Plainsmen didnt duck Miller Tuesday. Enid didnt have any available 103-pounders to go against her.
Five times this season a male wrestler has refused to wrestle Miller in a match.
If they dont want to wrestle (me), they should play basketball, Miller said. I get mad, really mad when that happens.
The boys that do wrestle her will go harder because they dont want to lose to a girl, Miller said.
She said she has to work harder to get respect, but has not been taunted much by her competitors most of whom have grown up wrestling against her. She said she has been treated well by teammates.
The boys know shes a wrestler, Johnson said. Most of those kids have wrestled tough matches against her or got beat by her growing up.
Some of the time, Johnson said, a team avoids her because they figure theyre going to lose to her.
Thats just smart coaching, Johnson said. She doesnt want to hear that. Most of the time she will be able to find them later at a tournament ... then she gets a chance to pay them back.
She has earned respect by going to El Reno on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer to work out with Team Oklahoma. She hopes to compete in the girls division this year.
Her parents Jerry and Novell have supported her from the beginning. She has competed in 19 different states. She is ranked No. 1 at 100 pounds nationally among female wrestlers her age.
They have a lot to do with where I am now, she said.
Johnson said her strength is her mental toughness.
She refuses to lose to anybody, Johnson said.
Im not afraid of anyone, Miller said. If theyre better than me, Ill work harder so I can beat them. I would rather wrestle the top people.
Wrestling, she said, has gotten tougher as she gets older because of the strength factor. To combat this, she and her dad work on weight training almost every night.
She always saw wrestling the boys the same as she does the girls. She hasnt lost to a girl since age 8.
A win is a win, she said when asked if beating a boy gave her a little more satisfaction. Ive always wrestled them, so its just the same.
Millers wrestling is a source of pride among girls in the school.
We love it, a friend said.
She has been at tournaments where the crowd except for the school of her opponent has gotten behind her. There have been times when fans around the mat where shes competing have been asked to step back so everybody can see.
That is exciting, Miller said.
Her name Joey does throw some opponents off thinking theyre going to wrestle a boy.
Her dream is to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games. She has trained with members of the 2004 U.S. womens wrestling team that competed in the Olympics for the first time.
Her hobby is operating a Web site that is a virtual encyclopedia of womens wrestling. Miller is close friends with Cheyenne Stokes, a female wrestler at Tulsa East Central. The pair go to a number of national-level tournaments together.
Were (female wrestlers) all pretty close, Miller said. Theres a lot more of us than theyre used to be. Theres a little pressure being ranked No. 1. Theres a lot of people chasing you.
Her future plans are to attend Cumberland College in Kentucky, one of the few colleges that have a womens team. However, if Oklahoma State ever started one, Im going to OSU.
She went to OSU coach John Smiths camps as a youngster and was treated just like anybody else. OSU assistant coach Mark Branch was one of her favorite coaches growing up.
Johnson sees Miller as the No. 3 or No. 4 seed in next weeks regional at Chickasha. If she can qualify (top four), then she has to be considered among the top five, at least, in the state.
It would be special if I can qualify, Miller said. If I work real hard, Ill have a chance.
Miller faced some barriers Thursday, besides receiving a forfeit. Johnson usually calls ahead to places the Boomers travel so there will be accommodations for Miller. There were none Thursday, so she changed in the womens restroom at Mark Price Arena.
Miller once played football, but Im too little for it now.
A wrestler is a wrestler after all.
A sport is a sport, she said.
She has strong words for those who dont think she should compete against boys.
Its their opinion, Miller said. My opinion is girls can do whatever they want. I really want it. I liked winning ... I dont like to lose ... I just love all of it.
Three Boomers qualify for state
2/20/05 Woodward News
CHICKASHA - Woodward's wrestlers made school history by qualifying three for the Class 4A State Tournament in regional action Saturday.
Matt Johnson finished second at 160 pounds, Kevin Branine was third at 135 pounds and Joey Miller took fourth at 103 pounds.
Until this year, the Boomers had never qualified more than two wrestlers in a year for state.
In addition, Miller may be the first girl ever to qualify for the state championships.
Johnson is a four-time state qualifier.
In the team standings, the Boomers scored 89 points for seventh place, their highest finish ever in the regional.
Boomer wrestlers ready for regionals
By Johnny McMahan/Senior Editor 2/17/05
Greg Johnson admits to being tired of the number two. It's one he's seen several times pertaining to state tournament qualifiers from the Boomer wrestling team.
For the past eight years, the Boomers have been represented at state, but never by more than two wrestlers in a single season.
Of course, there are circumstances where he would accept the number such as, "if it was two state champions at the same time," the veteran Woodward coach said.
Woodward's wrestlers start their bid for state tournament berths Friday in the Class 4A regional at Chickasha. The top four wrestlers in each regional advance to state.
The Boomers have four wrestlers ranked in the top 10 in Class 4A, led by top-ranked Matt Johnson who enters the post-season as the favorite at 160 pounds. Joey Miller (103), Kevin Branine (135) and Michael Comstock (152) also appear in the rankings.
"Matt should be seeded one," Greg Johnson said. "Michael Comstock should be three and Kevin Branine and Joey Miller should be three or four seeds.
"Other than that, we've got a couple of guys that might be seeded sixth."
Matt Johnson, 33-2, is already a three-time state qualifier and two-time medalist. He took the next step at the Chickasha Tournament in late January with a 4-3 victory over Cody Rowell, the two-time state champion from Duncan. Johnson has not lost since the Perry Tournament in December.
"Matt has wrestled pretty good the last couple of matches," Greg Johnson said. "He's got to face Rowell again this weekend and probably each other again next week. Unless one of them has a bad day, it should be those two."
The No. 3 seed is likely Chris McNeil from Lawton MacArthur who lost badly to Rowell at the dual state tournament.
Miller will be attempting to qualify for state and probably also make some history. As far as anyone can tell, she could become the first girl to qualify for the state wrestling championships.
The road isn't an easy one. Five top 10 wrestlers are in the regional.
"Justin Dill from Duncan should be the No. 1 seed and Lawton MacArthur (Jerald Jenkins) should be two," Greg Johnson said. "Joey beat him in summer freestyle.
"Joey should be three or four. The kid from Noble beat the El Reno kid at dual state and Joey lost to the El Reno kid. But in preseason , Joey beat the kid from Noble 15-2."
Miller is 30-5 in high school matches this season.
Comstock is 26-7 but only three of the losses came at his 152-pound weight class.
J. R. Harris, a state champion at 145 pounds last year for Lawton MacArthur, is the regional favorite and Chickasha's Dallas Smith is ranked second. Comstock, though, lost just 1-0 to Smith in a match that could have gone either way.
George Thompson of Duncan is ranked third, but hasn't wrestled Comstock.
"We've watched the tape of the match with Smith several times and I think Michael can beat him," Johnson said. "He's been wrestling real well and improved every week during the course of the year."
Branine has turned in a big year at 135 pounds, going 27-6 and getting over the tournament hurdle. After coming up short in tournaments earlier in his career, Branine has placed in three tourneys this year including an impressive second place at Chickasha.
"He's got 61 takedowns this year and that's pretty decent," Johnson said. "He's kind of turned it on."
With El Reno sent to the eastern regional, the class looks relatively open.
Johnson believes Terry Acker from Chickasha will be the top seed. Acker beat Branine in the Chickasha Tournament finals. Taylor Matthews from Lawton Mac is the probable second seed. Branine and four others from the western regional are also ranked.
The Boomers will also challenge at others weight, though they're likely to start out unseeded.
Heavyweight Derrek Branson has enjoyed some success.
"If he stays out of headlocks and wrestles smart, he's top four in the region," Johnson said.
At 215 pounds, Jacob Morgan has battled injuries, but was second in the only tournament where he was healthy.
"If he's prepared, and it looks like he is, he could have a good tournament too," Johnson said.
The coach said his team also has some potential at several other weights.
While El Reno and Shawnee were sent to the east regional, the west is still a tough deal, Johnson said.
"I still think we have eight of the top 10 teams in the west," he said. "The way I see it most of the weights the top four from the west and the El Reno qualifier will be the five fighting for the medals. That's not the case in every weight, but in a majority of them."
Teamwise, the Boomers are looking to get above 10th place, which is their best finish at a regional.
Lawton MacArthur and Duncan are the team favorites followed by Noble and Chickasha. After that, "it could be anyone, including us," Johnson said.
Notes: Miller isn't the only girl with a chance to qualify for state. East Central has a 125-pounder who won a match against Lawton MacArthur at dual state. Woodward has never won an individual state champion, but Matt Johnson could break that streak this season. Jamie Johnson and D. J. Henderson were state runnerups.

Enids wrestlers may have lost the war in lopsided dual losses to Woodward (55-15) and Edmond Memorial (60-15), but Plainsman Trey Wheeler, at least, won his battles.
Wheeler, in his first year back after sitting out a couple of years, had falls in both matches, flattening Woodwards Jason Schultz in 2:19 and Edmond Memorials Peaton McGatiaugh in 2:38.
It was pretty fun, said Wheeler, who had a fall against Norman last week. Im relearning everything, and its beginning to come back. Its exciting to see results.
Against Schultz, he did a Grandy roll to reverse his opponent, and he ended up pinning him in a headlock.
That was pretty sweet, Wheeler said.
He used a half-nelson for the second fall.
Hes starting to wrestle instead of thinking about it, said Enid coach Shane Kerr. The last two or three matches he has decided to hook it up and go for it.
The Plainsmen had three other wins against Woodward T.L. Layne over Caleb Lewis, 9-2 at 125; senior Michael Southern over Adam Peaneau, 6-5 at 189; and heavyweight Kyle Duke over Derek Branson, 2-1 in overtime.
Layne got Enids other contested win over Edmond Memorial 7-1 over Jon Bills. Lane Singer won by a forfeit.
Enid had to forfeit six weights against Edmond and four against Woodward. Kerr bumped up several wrestlers against the Boomers but didnt want to do that against the Bulldogs.
That really wouldnt have done us any good, Kerr said.
Four prominent Enid wrestlers didnt participate in the match because they had reached the maximum points allowed (determined by duals and tournaments) by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association Zac Layne, Greg Siegfried, Cody Roberts and Justin Glenn.
You always overschedule thinking youre going to get some matches canceled or someone will miss a match because of the ACTs, Kerr said. It didnt happen this year. Its awfully hard when you give up that many points.
Kerr was happy Southern could get a win on Senior Night.
We wrestled hard, he said. We just have to start looking forward to regionals (next week) now.
Clinton defeats Boomer wrestlers
By Johnny McMahan/Senior Editor 2/9/05
Clinton won four of the first five matches for a quick lead against the Boomers and went on to a 44-27 victory in high school wrestling Tuesday at Boomer Fieldhouse.
The Tornadoes also won the junior high dual 46-25.
It as a tough loss for the Boomers, who were celebrating Senior Night, recognizing veterans Matt Johnson, Kevin Branine, Jason Schultz, Adam Pareja and Jacob Morgan and their parents between duals.
A third period penalty point gave Clinton's 24th nationally ranked senior, Jacob Lamborn a 2-1 win over Joey Miller in the opening match.
The Tornadoes quickly built a big lead with a pin at 112 pounds and major decision at 119.
Charlie Baeza got Woodward on the board with a wild 18-15 win over Stevie Mejai, but Clinton's Zach Lamborn pinned Ramon Marin to make it 19-3.
Branine answered with a 40-second fall over Curtis Taylor.
Clinton received a forfeit at 140 pounds and a fall from Oscar Espinoza at 145 to lead 31-9.
Samie Flores then edged Michael Comstock 6-2 to just about wrap up the dual victory.
Johnson pinned Jevon Collins at 160 pounds, but Zack Harper got the points back for Clinton at 171 with a fall.

WHS wrestlers whip Watonga
By Johnny McMahan/Senior Editor 2/2/05
Woodward recorded its first-ever dual wrestling victory over Watonga, 46-23 at Boomer Fieldhouse Tuesday night.
The Boomers also won the junior high dual, beating a depleted Watonga squad, 39-22. The win was also the first for the junior high team over the Eagles.
In the high school match the Boomers never trailed, and won without 160-pounder Matt Johnson, who was held out due to illness.
Watonga gave the Boomers a 6-0 lead in the 103-pound match by electing not to have Travis Parker face Class 4A's fifth-ranked Joey Miller. It was the second home dual in a row a coach elected not to send a competitor out to face the national age-group champion girl wrestler.
Instead the Eagle coach moved Parker up to 112, where Boomer wrestler Brent Bucher got the honor of recording the fall. Bucher pinned Parker in 4:53 for a 12-0 Woodward lead.
Watonga got a win from Cody Parker at 119, but it didn't slow the Boomers momentum.
Charlie Baeza recorded a fall at 125 and Ramon Marin did the same at 1:30 to put the Boomers up 24-3.
Kevin Branine then major decisioned Seth Scoville and Luis Baeza added another fall to virtually wrap up the dual after 140 pounds.
Watonga won five of the last seven matches, but in between the Boomers got falls from Michael Comstock and Derrek Branson to keep the Eagles from mounting a serious challenge in the team score.
The Boomer junior high team got wins from Matt White, Jon Thomas, Cooper Harrison and Zach White, plus three forfeits to beat the Eagles handily.
The junior high wrestlers will compete in the Junior High All-State Tournament this weekend.
Woodward closes out the dual season with a Senior Night match against Clinton next Tuesday.

Johnson wins key match at Chickasha
woodward news 1/30/05
CHICKASHA - Woodward senior Matt Johnson likely earned the No. 1 ranking in Class 5A at 160 pounds with a victory over two-time state champion Cody Rowell of Duncan in the Chickasha Tournament finals.
Johnson, a two-time state medalist and ranked second in 5A, defeated Rowell 4-3 and will likely move into the No. 1 spot in the next rankings. Johnson was also named outstanding wrestler in the tournament.
As a team, the Boomers were fourth in the tournament with 128.5 points, just behind Altus with 130. Chickasha was first with 251 points and Duncan second with 199.

Boomer wrestlers rout McGuinness
By Johnny McMahan/Senior Editor 1/18/05
Woodward used five falls to dominate Bishop McGuinness 49-18 in a 5A District wrestling match at Boomer Fieldhouse on Monday.
The match was originally scheduled last Tuesday when El Reno and John Marshall were also on hand for district matches, but McGuinness asked to postpone.
Waiting a week didn't help the Irish much.
The Boomers also received two forfeits and won nine of the 14 matches. With the win, Woodward is assured of finishing second in the district behind El Reno, the huge favorite to win the state dual championship and regular state championship in February.
El Reno is ranked as high as fifth nationally in some polls.
Woodward opened up early on the Irish. After leading 6-0 due to a forfeit, the Boomers won two straight matches for a 16-0 lead.
Kevin Branine controlled Joey DeGuisti from the start and got the fall in 2:37, then Luis Baeza whipped Alex Krause for a 12-0 major decision.
Justin Westhalen recorded the first McGuinness victory, defeating David Flores at 145 pounds 3-1 on a takedown in the final 15 seconds.
At 152 pounds, Jonathan Kraft scored three points in the last minute to edge Jason Schultz, 9-6.
Michael Comstock and Matt Johnson recorded back-to-back falls in 1:35 and 2:29 respectively to make it 28-6 Boomers. Johnson, who is ranked second in Class 4A at 160 pounds, wrestled at 171.
McGuinness won the next three matches to trim the Boomer lead to 28-18.
At 103 pound, though, McGuinness elected to forfeit to Joey Miller, a multi-time national girls champions, rather than send Augie Lombardo out to wrestle. Lombardo had weighed in at 103.
Miller is ranked sixth in Class 4A at 103 pounds.
The six points from the forfeit basically wrapped up the dual for the Boomers, who led 34-18 with three matches left.
For good measure, the Boomers won all three bouts.
Brent Bucher rolled up a big lead, then pinned Jake Maier in 5:43, John Davis routed John Donley 10-3 and Charlie Baeza made quick work of Brian Kelly in 1:34.

Sport Notes
Woodward news 1/14/05
If you haven't made it to see the Boomer wrestling teams this year, there are a couple of chances next week.
The high school team hosts McGuinness at 6 p.m. Monday for a dual that should decide second place in the district. National power EI Reno has first place locked up.
The Boomers have some solid wrestlers including a state champion candidate in Matt Johnson at 160 pounds. Freshman Joey Miller has a chance to be perhaps the first girl, or at least one of the few, girls to qualify for the high school state tournament. Miller, by the way, is a multitime national champion in girls youth programs.
Michael Comstock, Kevin Branine and Jacob Morgan are some of the other veteran wrestlers for the Boomers, who continue to build in numbers and talent.

One look at the lineups for Burns Flat-Dill City and Geary and it was obvious the Boomers were going to win both high school duals in their home opener Tuesday night.
Both the opponents gave up forfeits at over half the weights.
Still, when the Boomers got the opportunity on the mat, they wrestled well and won both duals handily. The Boomers defeated Burns Flat-Dill City 57-15 and Geary 64-12 to even their season record at 2-2.
The junior high team split duals, beating Burns Flat-Dill City (which brought just two wrestlers) and losing to Geary.
Seniors Kevin Branine and Matt Johnson recorded two falls to lead the Boomers and Michael Comstock won twice.
The Boomer high school team goes to Weatherford for a tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Boomer wrestlers take on Altus

ALTUS - Woodward opens its dual wrestling season here tonight with junior high and high school matches against the Bulldogs.
The Boomers are coming off two strong open tournament performances where they placed 16 and 20 wrestlers, respectively, in the top six of their weight classes. In addition, freshmen Joey Miller and Derrek Branson won championships in the prestigious Panhandle Nationals in Amarillo over the Thanksgiving weekend.
"We've done pretty good in the tournaments," said Boomer head coach Greg Johnson. "Joey Miller has wrestled real well at 103 and at 275 I've been very impressed with Derrek Branson. Both went to nationals this summer and that always makes you better."
Matt Johnson, a three-time state qualifier and one of the favorites for a state title this year is undefeated in the early going. Johnson wrestled for the Oklahoma team in national competition over the summer.
"Matt has been wrestling well," Johnson said. "And Michael Comstock only lost to Matt in the first preseason tournament. In the second one, he didn't lose until he hurt his shoulder."
Comstock is expected back soon and the Boomers should also get Jacob Morgan back before the season gets too far along. Both are waiting on doctor's releases.
Jason Schultz won his first high school medal during the tournaments and coach Johnson said Ramon Marin has been impressive in the wrestling room.
Altus as usual will provide a solid challenge.
"They have a pretty good 119 pounder and 125 pounder," Johnson said. "I also think somewhere around 160 and 171 they have a pretty decent guy.
"Other than that I don't know much about them. They've got a new coach this year."
Here is the high school lineup for the dual.
