Boomer wrestlers lose close dual to Watonga

Woodward closed out the home portion of its wrestling schedule with a 40-34 loss to Watonga at Boomer Fieldhouse Tuesday night.
Watonga also won the junior high dual 44-18.
Forfeits were the difference in the high school dual. Watonga had an 18-6 edge in forfeit points, enough to hold off a big Boomer rally in the upper weights.
Three consecutive falls by the Boomers at 171, 189 and 215 pounds tied the dual at 34-34, but Watonga heavyweight Matt Boden pinned Vic Desai, wrestling up a weight, to clinch the victory.
After the opening four matches, all forfeits, Watonga held an 18-6 lead.
At 130 pounds, Adam Osmus used a late reverse and near fall to edge Kevin Branine 10-7 in a match that was back and forth through the entire six minutes.
Branine had taken the 7-6 lead on a takedown with 1:16 left but Osmus got the late points.
A decision by Ty Ray and pin by Will Hartfield increased Watonga’s lead to 30-6.
Matt Johnson got a major decision at 145 pounds and Jake Jones a fall at 152 to get the Boomers within 30-16.
Josh Scott got a major decision for Watonga at 160 pounds to make it 34-16.
The Boomers dominated the next three weights with Michael Eagan, D. J. Henderson and Jake Morgan all wrestling up a weight and recording falls.
In the junior high dual, the Boomers won just three matches, one by fall, one by forfeit and one by a disqualification.
Dusty Pollard received a win at 152 pounds when Watonga’s DeDe Wilson was disqualified in the second period.
Miller, moving up to 102 pounds, got an easy victory when Watonga elected to forfeit despite having a wrestler ready.
Lewis had an impressive outing in pinning Tyler Brown in 1:45.
Next up for the junior high wrestlers is the junior high state tournament at Oklahoma City on Friday and Saturday.
The high school team will be off until Monday when the Boomers go to Mangum.

Boomer wrestlers drop close dual

Forfeits were too much for the Boomers to overcome in their district dual against Guthrie at Boomer Fieldhouse Thursday.
The Bluejays got 12 more points in forfeits than the Boomers and that proved decisive in a 42-38 Guthrie victory.
Guthrie also won the junior high dual 53-22.
The varsity match started at 112 pounds, the first of three weights the Boomers had open and Guthrie took an early 18-0 lead. Woodward got one of the forfeits back in the final match at 103 pounds.
Kevin Branine got the Boomers on the board with a 19-3 technical fall over Clayton Furlong, but back-to-back falls by Kaleb Gibson and Josh O’Dell put Guthrie up 30-5.
Matt Johnson got a pin for the Boomers, but Kevin Luper answered with one for Guthrie and the lead was 36-11.
The Boomers won the next four matches to get close.
Michael Eagan pinned Keeton Hill, then D. J. Henderson recorded an 11-4 decision over Shawn Riley at 171 pounds. Pins by Jacob Morgan and Patrick Cornwell made it 36-32.
Bob Herring’s fall at heavyweight sealed the victory for the Bluejays.
In the junior high dual, the Boomers got wins from Joey Miller, Stoney Swearingem, Joseph Cox and Derek Branson but otherwise Guthrie dominated the action.
Woodward will host national power El Reno on Tuesday for its final district match. Action starts with the junior high at 6 p.m. followed by the high school.

WHS wrestlers off to strong start at Watonga

WATONGA -Woodward High School has five ':. wrestlers in the championship semifinals at the Watonga
Invitational Tournament and several others remain in the
consolation rounds.
John Davis at 103 pounds, Michael Comstock at 135, Matt Johnson at 145, Jake Jones at 152 and D. J. Henderson at 171 are all in the championship bracket. Davis, Comstock and Henderson all received a bye and won quarterfinal matches. Davis and Comstock recorded decisions and Henderson had a fall.
Johnson used a fall arid major decision to reach the semifinals and Jones got a fall and a close decision over Donnie Haselbrink of Newkirk.
The semifinals begin today at 11 :30 a.m.
Still wrestling in the consolations are Kevin Branine at 130 pounds, Jason Schultz and Bob Barton at 140 pounds, Michael Eagan and Patrick Underhill at 160, Jacob Morgan at 189, Patrick CQrnwell at 215 and Alan Walton at heavyweight,

Boomer wrestlers pin Kingfisher

Four pins in the last five matches boosted the Woodward Boomers to a 42-36 high school wrestling victory over Kingfisher at Boomer Fieldhouse Thursday.

The rally from a 33-6 deficit gave the Woodward teams a sweep on the evening. In the junior high dual, the Boomers won 40-34.

Vic Desai pinned J.P. Allen in the 215-pound match to give Boomers a quick 6-0 lead in the high school dual.

The next several matches belonged to the Yellowjackets.

Three pins and two forfeits put Kingfisher up 30-6, then Tyler Davis edged Woodward’s Kevin Branine 6-4 in overtime to make it 33-6. Branine scored a takedown in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime.

Michael Comstock and Dusty Pollard received forfeits at 135 and 140 pounds, trimming the Yellowjacket lead to 33-18.

The Boomers proceeded to dominate the next four weights. Matt Johnson rolled up a 13-2 lead before pinning T.J. Wallace at 5:29 of the 145-pound match.

The next three bouts didn’t get out of the first period. Jake Jones flattened David Journay in 1:46 and Pat Underhill pinned Nestor Rodriguez in 1:35 to put the Boomers ahead 36-33. D. J. Henderson then sealed the outcome with a pin of Dane Reid in 1:42.

The Boomer high school team will take part in the Perry Tournament today and Saturday.

The junior high match was close all the way.

Stoney Swearingim, David Flores, Bob Barton and Jacob Radke had pins for the Boomers.

Kingfisher came back with falls at two consecutive weights plus a forfeit.

The Boomers got a forfeit, then Joey Miller posted a 16-4 major decision over Cameron Roedel for a 34-30 Woodward lead.

Kingfisher tied the match again before Woodward’s Joseph Cox pinned Dakota Long in 3:02 for the dual victory.

Boomer wrestlers beat Mangum

Using four falls, the Boomer wrestlers evened their dual record at 1-1 with an exciting 42-33 victory over Mangum at the Woodward Middle School gym Monday afternoon.
Woodward also won the junior high dual, 30-25.

Patrick Underhill,. D. J. Henderson, Vic Desai and Dusty Pollard all had falls for the Boomers.

Pollard’s 44-second fall over Lance Griffin sealed the outcome.

Woodward also received forfeits at two weights and picked up an injury default victory when Mangum’s Trevor Robinson was sick and unable to finish his match while leading 17-14 with just one second remaining.

Mangum recorded three falls and had two forfeits.

One of the more exciting matches didn’t involve a pin.

Mangum’s Michael Fuentes took a 9-0 lead over Jake Morgan early in their 189-pound match. Morgan answered with a five-point move and had Fuentes in trouble with a cradle late in the match before losing 13-10.

In the junior high dual, pins by Joey Miller and Stoney Swearingem sparked the Boomers’ 30-25 victory.

Woodward will host Kingfisher for high school and junior high matches Thursday at Boomer Fieldhouse. Start time is 6 p.m.

NOBLE -Six Woodward High School wrestlers placed in the Noble Open Tournament on Saturday led by D.J Henderson's championship performance at 171 pounds.
Henderson won with a fall over Guthrie's Shawn Riley, who is third in the state pre- season rankings, said Boomer wrestling coach Greg Johnson.
Matt Johnson and Patrick Underhill were second at 152 pounds and 160 pounds, Jake Jones was fourth at 152 pounds Michael Eagan fifth at 189 pounds.
Three Boomer wrestlers placed in the junior high division.
Joey Miller won the cham- pionship at 94 pounds and she remained undefeated for the season.
Joseph Cox was fifth at 118 pounds and Derek Branson was fifth at heavy weight.

Boomer wrestlers off to strong start

YUKON – Woodward’s wrestlers began their season with an impressive outing in the Yukon Open Tournament on Saturday.
The Boomers placed 16 wrestlers in the high school and junior high divisions and won a total of 59 matches.
Matt Johnson led the Boomers in the high school division with a first place finish at 152 pounds. Johnson defeated Antonio Ramirez of Enid 4-2 in the title match.
Three Boomers placed at 171 pounds with D. J. Henderson third, Michael Eagan fourth and Jacob Morgan fifth.
Freshman Michael Comstock was fifth at 145 pounds and Vic Desai fifth at 189 pounds.
In the eighth and ninth grade division, Boomer seventh grader Joey Miller won the championship at 94 pounds and Patrick Underhill, a freshman, was second at 165 pounds. Comstock was fifth at 142 pounds and Bob Barton took fifth at 152 pounds.
The Boomers entered six wrestlers, all seventh graders, in the sixth-seventh grade division and each one placed.
Miller won five matches to take the 94 pound division. Miller won three matches by fall and one by tech fall. She is coming off a national championship this summer in the girls national tournament and was also a member of the Oklahoma team for the national freestyle duals.
Stoney Swearingim had an equally impressive tournament, pinning all four opponents to win the 126-pound division. Only one of his matches made it to the third period.
Derek Branson was second at heavyweight and Joseph Cox and Patrick Leahy were third at 118 pounds and 185 pounds, respectively. Kevin Jackson was fourth at 185 pounds.
The Boomers will take part in the Noble Open Tournament on Saturday.
