USA Wrestling's Women's Programs and Opportunities

There's a new national sports trend all across the USA and around the world. Thousands of young women are joining the 'world's oldest and greatest sport. People everywhere are learning that wrestling is for girls.

This sport, practiced in humankind's earliest civilizations, and showcased in both the ancient and modern Olympics, is becoming popular with girls and women. The thrill of one-on-one competition, along with the personal benefits that wrestling offers, are now available to women everywhere.

WHY WRESTLING?
With so many activities available to young women today, why wrestling? Perhaps, a better question might be, why shouldn't women enjoy wrestling? Everything that makes wrestling one of the most popular sports for boys also makes it a great sport for girls. The reasons to wrestle are compelling and exciting.

ANYBODY CAN WRESTLE
Wrestling is a safe, fun and challenging activity for everybody, regardless of height, weight or physical attributes. The whole family can take part: brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, moms and dads. Consider these benefits offered by wrestling:
Self esteem and confidence
Health and fitness
Fun and challenge
Discipline and dedication
Team and individual competition
Life skills and personal lessons

WHY USA WRESTLING?
USA Wrestling is the national governing body for wrestling in the United States. It is involved in all wrestling outside of the high school and college systems. This organization hosts competitions for athletes of all ages all across the nation. USA Wrestling has thousands of volunteers and a national staff dedicated to serving its members. Women's wrestling is one of the fastest growing segments of the sport.

HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED?
Join a club - USA Wrestling clubs are available in many communities. Coaches, parents and volunteers come together to provide training and competition opportunities for young people. Contact your USA Wrestling state chairperson, or visit usawrestling.org for more information.
Compete at a local tournament - USA Wrestling has 49 state associations, all which provide local and state level competition for athletes. Many states have started a series of women's wrestling tournaments, as well. Contact your USA Wrestling state chairperson, or visit usawrestling.org for more information.
Compete at a USA Wrestling Regional or National event - USA Wrestling sponsors major women's wrestling events, including four National Championships and a number of Regional competitions on selected age levels.
Attend a wrestling clinic or camp - Wrestling coaches often offer clinics or wrestling camps for young people. Summer wrestling camps are very popular, and many camps have special programs and instruction for girls.

TRAINING AND COMPETITION
Wrestling, like many martial arts and contact sports, has a tradition of co-ed training opportunities. In Kids wrestling programs, boys and girls often practice and compete against in each other. In many states, girls join their junior high and high school wrestling teams and practice and compete with boys. Many club programs provide girls and boys a chance to practice and learn together. USA Wrestling allows girls to compete against boys if they wish.

However, USA Wrestling also provides a women-only competition structure. As children mature into young people and adults, the physical characteristics of men and women increasingly differ. Women's-only events offer a true test of a female wrestler's skill, experience, strength and conditioning. This is a fair way for girls to challenge themselves against their peers.

THE USA WRESTLING EXPERIENCE
When you get involved with USA Wrestling, you may have the chance to:
Improve yourself as a wrestler
Travel and visit new places
Learn more about the sport outside of your school and community
Make friends and develop lifelong memories
Test yourself against other female wrestlers your age
Experience other cultures and compete against other nations

Currently, there are two World Championships, the Senior World Championships and the FILA Junior World Championships. USA Wrestling conducts a World Team Trials at each level to determine the athletes who will represent the United States at the World Championships.

WOMEN'S TEAM USA
Women's Team USA includes the best women wrestlers in the nation, members of the USA Wrestling Senior national team. The top three competitors in each of the six international weight classes qualify for Team USA. AMERICAN WRESTLING HEROES
Tricia Saunders, 4x World Champion - A wrestling champion competing against boys in National Kids programs, this Michigan native left the sport to become a gymnast as a teenager. She was America's first World Champion, and has won the most World titles.

Sandra Bacher, 1999 World Champion - A world-class judo player, Sandy first tried wrestling in 1995 as an adult and quickly became the national champion. She improved every year, winning a 1997 World silver medal and a 1998 World bronze medal. In 1999, she rocked the world, becoming America's second World Champion. Sandy has competed in three Olympics in judo, but it is in wrestling that she became the best in the world.

Kristie Marano, 2000 World Champion - A member of a wrestling family from New York, and also a talented judo athlete, Kristie made her first U.S. World Team as a high school student. After winning four straight World silver medals, Kristie broke through with an outstanding performance to win the 2000 World title.

Shannon Williams Yancey, 4x World silver medalist - Shannon was the daughter of a wrestling coach and a member of her California high school team at a time when few girls wrestled. She was one of the first pioneers of women's wrestling in the nation, and won numerous medals for the USA. She is now a high school wrestling coach, and was an assistant coach for the Women's Senior World Team.

WRESTLING, A FAMILY SPORT
Wrestling can truly include the entire family. Brothers and sisters can compete in the sport, starting in Kids programs and moving through the school system. Mothers and fathers can participate as coaches, officials, volunteers and fans, while supporting the efforts of their children. When you go to compete in a wrestling event, bring the entire family and let them enjoy the great sport of wrestling.
