UO wrestlers dominate dominate Clock Open

11/18/03

FOREST GROVE -- It was a day for the Ducks Sunday in Forest Grove as three University of Oregon wrestlers won their weights and two others placed in the 2003 Mike Clock Open, formerly the Pacific Senior Open, in Forest Grove.

Led by the meet's Outstanding Wrestler, Shane Webster, the Ducks led the way with their five placers. Webster blew through the 174-pound bracket, amassing a pin and two technical falls before downing Steve Rose by a 20-8 margin in the final.

A pair of Ducks swept in to walk away with the lightweight classes. Aaron Pedeferri took the 125 pound title, scoring a 2-0 decision Josh Sampio. Martin Mitchell wrestled to his second win by decision in the 133 final after a pair of pins in the quarters and semis, scoring a 7-6 victory over Bobby Pfennings.

Pacific, Southern Oregon and Southwest Oregon CC each had two champions each. The Boxers were led by veterans Garret Miyake (Jr., Canby, Ore.) at 141 pounds and Ryan Jones (Sr., Weiser, Idaho) at 184 pounds. Miyake used a series of strong decisions to advance to the final where he defeated Clint Leonard of Oregon State 6-5. Jones also had an easy ride through the 184-pound bracket, eventually winning the final over SOU's David O'Brien 5-2.

Southern Oregon received victories from Grant Thompson at 197 pounds and Wes Balensifer at 285 pounds. Balensifer tied for the title after he and Daniel Stugell double defaulted.

SWOCC was led by 165-pounder Nick Apperson, who had the upset of the tournament when he knocked off NAIA national champion Neal Ewers in the second round in a close 4-3 match. He rode that high to the final, where he used a 3-2 decision to beat SOU's Brian Wilson. Phillip Perez took SWOCC's other title at 149 pounds, knocking off Seth Roy in the final 1-0.

On the women's bracket, it was quite a day for the Canadians, who came home with four of the eight individual championships. Simon Fraser netted two titles from Sara Flup-Allen at 105.5 pounds and Carol Huynh at 121. Douglas' Coby Palfey won the 147.5 pound class and Amanda Gerhart took home honors at 138.5

Danielle Hobieka of the Dave Schulz Wrestling Club won the 130-pound class and earned the meet's Outstanding Female Wrestler Award after she breezed through pool competition with three pins. In the final, it was a narrow 7-6 victory over Cobra WC's Natasha Unemoto to take the title.

The host Boxers had one champion in Kapua Torres (Fr., Kahuku, Hawaii), who won the 112-pound class with a 2-0 record, including a technical fall and a pin.

U.S. Rosters set for 2003 Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France, Nov. 28-29

11/18/2003
John Fuller/USA Wrestling

The Henri Deglane Challenge is slated to begin on Nov. 28 in Nice, France and the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation will send a team of top U.S. athletes to compete. This annual event features many talented athletes from European nations.

The Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation will also bring 15-20 fans to the event, an annual social activity that accompanies the tour.

Leading the U.S. men's freestyle lineup will be 2003 U.S. National Team members Kirk White (Tacoma, Wash./Dave Schultz WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Lee Fullhart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.

White placed third at the U.S. World Team Trials earlier this year. He won a gold medal at this tournament last year, helping the U.S. to win the team title.

Fullhart has placed second at the last two U.S. World Team Trials. He captured a gold medal at the 2003 Pan American Championships. He has won seven international medals throughout his career.

Also competing in men's freestyle for the United States will be Chris Fleeger (Trout Run, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Jared Frayer (Cambridge, Mass./Dave Schultz WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Ryan Tobin (Philadelphia, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Fleeger was an NCAA runner-up for Purdue in 2003, and has taken an Olympic redshirt year for the 2003-04 college season. He won a bronze medal in the 2002 University World Championships and also captured a bronze at the 2000 Henri Deglane Challenge when he was a redshirt freshman in college.

Frayer has won multiple international events in the past year, including the 2003 Manitoba Open and 2003 Dave Schultz Memorial International. He is currently an assistant coach at Harvard Univ.

Tobin placed fifth at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials. He won a bronze medal at the 2002 Henri Deglane Challenge. He is currently an assistant coach at the Univ. of Pennsylvania.

Competing in women's freestyle for the U.S. will be Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Tela O'Donnell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Miranda has had a stellar year, winning gold medals at the 2003 Pan American Games and World Cup along with a silver medal at the 2003 World Championships. She won a gold medal at the 2002 Henri Deglane Challenge.

O'Donnell placed second at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials after winning her first U.S. Nationals title in May. She recently captured a bronze medal at the Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open.

Both women will be wrestling outside of their natural weight classes at this event due to the fact that only two women's weight classes are competed at this event.

The U.S. Greco-Roman roster will include Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Heath Sims (Huntington Beach, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Chael Sonnen (Eugene, Ore./Dave Schultz WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Jason Loukides (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Warren placed third at the 2003 U.S. Nationals and fourth at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials. He won a silver medal at the 2002 Henri Deglane Challenge.

Sims was a 2000 Olympian. He has competed in the Henri Deglane Challenge twice, winning a gold medal in 2000. He placed fifth at the 2003 U.S. Nationals.

Sonnen placed sixth in the 2002 Henri Deglane Challenge. In 2000, he placed third in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He currently competes in submission fighting.

Loukides won a bronze medal at the 2003 CISM Military World Championships and was the Pan American Championships runner-up this year as well. He placed fourth at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials.

Coaching the U.S. teams will be Kendall Cross (Brookline, Mass.), a 1996 Olympic gold medalist and a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation.

All U.S. athletes in this event will represent the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club.

In last year's Henri Deglane Challenge, the U.S. captured eight medals overall. Winning gold medals were Cary Kolat at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and White at 74 kg/163 lbs. in men's freestyle and Miranda at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Sara McMann at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in women's freestyle.

Early 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling preview for women's freestyle

11/18/2003
Jeff Weitekamp/Indiana Sports Corporation

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Women's freestyle wrestling will be contested at the Olympic Games for the first time in four weight classes - 48 kg/105.5 lbs., 55 kg/121 lbs., 63 kg/138.5 lbs. and 72 kg/158.5 kg.

There are seven weight classes contested each year at the World Championships in women's wrestling. With only four spots for the Athens Games available, many athletes will be changing weight class this year. Because the U.S. women being deep and talented in seven weight classes, the battles for those four spots at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling, which takes place May 21-23 at Indianapolis' RCA Dome, should be full of drama.

Today, www.trials2004.com continues its "Early U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling Preview," with a brief look at the contenders and favorites in women's freestyle.

At 48 kg./105.5 lbs., Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) is now a two-time World medalist after winning silver in New York City. In order to have a shot at Olympic gold, she'll most likely need to go through 2003 Nationals and World Team Trials runner-up Clarissa Chun (Colorado, Colo./Gator WC), and talented college star Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./New York AC). Possibly moving down from 51 kg/112.25 lbs. are 2003 National champion Malinda Ripley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and National team member Katie Kunimoto (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC).

There should be a logjam of talent at 55 kg/121 lbs., led by 2002 and 2003 World silver medalist Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army). Her top competitors are all talented, including 2003 National champion Tela O'Donnell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC), national team member Marcie Van Dusen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and 2001 World silver medalist Stephanie Murata (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids). Possibly moving up from 51 kg/112.25 lbs. is 2003 World bronze medalist Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids). Other athletes may choose to drop from 59 kg/130 lbs., as well.

At 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Sara McMann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) lost in overtime in the finals of the World Championships. To make the Olympic Team, she'll most likely have to defeat seven-time World medalist and two-time World champion Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./New York AC). McMann has beaten Marano at this weight for two years, then Marano moved up to wrestle at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. Possibly moving up from 59 kg/130 lbs. are 2003 World bronze medalist Sally Roberts (Colorado, Colo./Gator WC) and 2003 World Team Trials champion Erin Tomeo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids). Possibly dropping down from 67 kg/147.5 lbs. is Kaci Lyle (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids).

Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Cumberland College), Samantha Lang (Tualatin, Ore./Sunkist Kids) and Katie Downing (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) are a few of the athletes expected to challenge for the spot at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Montgomery beat high school star Lang at the World Team Trials, then won her second career World silver medal. Downing, who is originally from Pendleton, Ind., which is just east of Indianapolis, will be moving up from 67 kg/147.5 lbs., where she was the 2002 and 2003 World Team Trials champion. Others with high hopes are Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) and Stephany Lee (Honolulu, Hawaii/Missouri Valley College).

At the World Championships last September, the U.S. women claimed a medal in all seven weight classes - one gold and four silver and two bronze. With only four weight classes, the U.S. only has room for four of those world medalists. It will definitely be "One Dream. One Weekend. One Shot." (The official theme created by USA Wrestling and the Local Organizing Committee for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling.)

Visit themat.com next week for a look at the contenders in each of the Greco-Roman weight classes.

Tickets are now available at all Ticketmaster outlets, charge-by-phone (317-239-5151 in Central Indiana) or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Order forms are also available at the event's official Web site, www.trials2004.com.

Two All-Session ticket packages are available. The first is the Gold Medal Club All-Session ticket package for $150, which features reserved seating, access to the Gold Medal Club Lounge, a souvenir program, a commemorative gift, autograph signings with former Olympic athletes, free parking and an exclusive opportunity to meet the new U.S. Olympic Team. The Silver Level All-Session ticket package is $80 in general admission seating.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials competition format features a two-day challenge tournament and a championship finals series. The challenge tournament in all three styles will take place Friday, May 21 and Saturday, May 22. This will include all of the competitors except the 2004 national champions who will advance to the finals. The 2004 national championships will be in Las Vegas April 9-10.

Sunday, May 23, will be the championship finals in each weight class, featuring the national champion against the challenge tournament winner in a best-of-three series.

In addition to women's freestyle, the spots in the seven weight classes for men's freestyle and Greco-Roman also will be up for grabs. Only the champions in each weight class will be on the U.S. Olympic Team and compete at the Olympic Games August 22-29, 2004, in Athens, Greece.

The RCA Dome - home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, the 1991, 1997, 2000, 2006 and 2010 NCAA Men's Final Four, 2005 NCAA Women's Final Four and the 1991 World Gymnastics Championships - will be the site of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. It will be the first time an elite-level wrestling event will be staged in a domed stadium. USA Wrestling and Indiana Sports Corporation are organizing the event.
