MARSHALL, Mo. – Oklahoma City University repeated as Women’s College Wrestling Association national champion on the strength of four national individual champions and two runner-up finishes Saturday at the Burns Athletic Center.

Stephanie Waters at 44 kilograms, Michaela Hutchison at 55, Amberle Montgomery at 67 and Brittany Delgado at 95 each captured national titles for the Stars. Nicole Woody at 48 and Melissa Simmons at 82 made the finals at their weights as OCU outscored Cumberlands (Ky.) 124-76.

The Stars had 13 all-Americans as Taylor Busboom at 44, Na’Tasha Umemoto at 51, Ashley Hudson at 59, Sheila McCabe at 63 and Brittney Roberts at 72 each took third.

OCU’s other all-Americans were Ashley Morehouse, sixth at 59; and Tessa Plana, fifth at 63.

“We’re pretty excited,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “We wrestled pretty well. We had a couple of exceptional matches from the girls. The most important thing is we have everyone coming back. A lot of the girls are disappointed in their finishes.”

The Stars benefited from having five individuals take third. While those didn’t finish in the championship round, they scored the maximum amount of points they could in that situation.

“After we lost those semifinals, the way we wrestled those third-place matches, that’s where we won the tournament,” Randall said. “We needed everyone to come back through the consolations. To win, you’ve got to battle back. They had to come right back up to the mat after losing in the semifinals.”

Waters, a junior from Joliet, Ill., knocked off Lisa Martinez of Cumberlands 5-0, 5-2 in the 44-kilo championship bout. Waters pulled off a five-point move to win the first period.

“She hit a five-point move to end the period in the first period in the first 40 seconds of the match,” Randall said. “It was exceptional.”

Hutchison, a sophomore from Soldotna, Alaska, edged Shauna Isbell of Lindenwood (Mo.) 1-0, 2-0 to win her second consecutive national title at 55.

“Michaela wrestled conservatively and cautiously,” Randall said. “She did enough to win, but we could have gotten more from her.”

Montgomery, a freshman from Orting, Wash., caught Veronica Carlson of Missouri Baptist in a headlock and finished her off a pin in 1:05. Montgomery, 22, joined the Stars at the start of the spring semester and became the 67-kilogram national champion.

“She had a perfect matchup,” Randall said. “Montgomery is a headlocker, and Carlson pushes and shoves.

“She’s amazing. She didn’t get in until Christmas. She came to Oklahoma City to get her degree and wrestle. She packed everything up and gave everything up to compete for us. Usually it takes those girls from the Olympic Training Center a year to get used to our style, but she works so hard.”

Delgado, a sophomore from Simpsonville, S.C., beat Jessica Scott of Cumberlands 1-0, 2-1 at 95. Delgado overcame an illness to erase the sting of finished third at 82 last year.

“Brittany Delgado had the flu, but she shook the curse and won the national title,” Randall said. “She finished third last year, and that was tough. She’s so mentally tough. She was so sick she didn’t get her award.”

Woody, a junior from Gambrills, Md., fell 0-2, 1-0, 3-0 to Simon Fraser’s Victoria Anthony in the 48-kilo title match. Hilary Greening of Simon Fraser nipped Simmons, a sophomore from Ridgefield, Wash., 1-0, 2-0 for the 82-kilo national crown.

To overcome Karon Scott’s injury at 95, Roberts moved from 82 to 72, Simmons from 72 to 82 and Delgado bumped from 82 to 95.

“The whole tournament was tougher,” Randall said. “We’ve added quality coaches and teams. Link Davis and I had to work our butts off. Coach Davis does a great job.”

Times-Herald staff report/
Posted: 01/31/2010 12:00:15 AM PST

Bethel High's Alice Hoover showed once again why she is considered one of the best wrestlers in the state.

The Jaguars' 116-pounder placed third in the California State Girls Wrestling Championship at Hanford on Sunday, the second of two days of competition. Hoover lost in the semifinals to the eventual champion, but came back to win her two next two matches and claim the medal.

Bethel placed third overall in the team standings with a score of 116.

The Jaguars' Desire Espana (103) placed sixth, followed by Alyssa Wong (132) in sixth.

"Desire Espena lost her first match to the Southern Section champion and came all way back to place sixth. That was a phenomenal job on her part," Bethel coach Mike Sariano said.

Hogan High wrestler Chantel White (154) placed fifth in the State Championships. White was one win away from the semifinals before losing to Alyessa Hess of Monument High School.

Hogan's Alana Brasher (118) lost her consolation match to finish with a 1-2 record. Katrina Abug (162) and Jamilla Woodfork (138) also lost their consolation matches, but finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.

Vallejo High also had two wrestlers in consolation matches Sunday. Sophie Daniels (108) and Breanne Boggs (138) both lost.

"The competition was tough ... more competitive than in recent years," Sariano said. "Girls wrestling is getting noticed in state."

Marin Independent Journal

HANFORD - Novato High junior Courtney Madson and Hornets senior Marie McDonald each completed a perfect weekend Saturday to claim championships in the California Women's Wrestling Association state meet, helping Novato place 11th overall out of 174 teams in the event.

Madson, now 25-0, rolled up a 17-1 win in the semifinals at 108 pounds, then followed with a first-period pin in the final for the title. McDonald (20-1), wrestling at 189 pounds, recorded pins in the semifinals and final en route to the championship.

"They both wrestled extremely well," Novato coach Steve Sanner said. "To be honest, with Courtney we didn't find anybody who was at her level in the state of California, which is why she is shooting for the national title. And Marie ... her finals match was hard-fought. I can't say enough good things about Marie. I'm very proud of both of them."

Madson and McDonald will be among eight Hornets headed to the North Coast Section tournament on Feb. 27. Sanner said he expects both to compete for titles, and that the rest of his squad should be a threat as well.

"Our new goal as a team is to come home with some kind of pennant from the NCS tournament," Sanner said. "We've got about three weeks to get the girls ready. We're hoping for a top-3 finish or even a championship. Short-term that's our goal."

Madson also will compete in two national tournaments afterward

SA’s Katie Germain Wins Girls State Wrestling Title

By BRIAN GERMAIN, Sports Correspondent
Published:
Saturday, January 30, 2010 10:07 AM EST
Katie Germain, a freshman at Summerlin Academy, put together a complete four pin performance to win the 119 lbs. division at the Girls State High School Wrestling Championships.

Approximately 130 girls from around Florida competed at the championships, held at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando.

“Dominate! That sums up Katie’s performance in one word,” Brian Germain, her father and coach, said.

“She was impressive to watch” Vince Parker, BHS wrestling coach, said. “I really wanted to support Katie and to see what a girl’s state tournament was all about.
“After watching Katie, I hope my own daughter will be able to wrestle like her when she gets to high school.”

Germain started her day by pinning Stephanie Caban of Oakridge High School at 1:03 in the first period.

In her second round, Germain recorded another pin, this time against Katherine Masten of Lake Mary High School, in just 25 seconds.

“It was classic Katie,” Coach Germain said. “She used her wrestling-adapted judo to throw her opponent to her back where she quickly ended the match with a pin.”

That victory set up Germain’s first real test against the number one seed and last year’s state-runner-up, Kayla Watson of Harmony High School, in the semi finals.

Coach Parker was very confident going into the semifinals, “I thought Katie could pin her all along.”

Parker was right. Germain took a 3-2 lead into the second period before taking complete control of Watson. Up 7-2 in the second, Germain pinned Watson at 3:17 into the match.

With that victory the finals were set against a fellow freshman, Katlynn Cormier of Fort White High School.

Cormier entered the finals undefeated in her season at 13-0 and having pinned all three of her preliminary opponents too.

“I was beaten by Katlynn last year,” Germain said. “I was looking for paybacks. I knew my wrestling had improved over the year and I just hoped it was good enough to win my first state title.”

She put Cromier on her back midway through the first period but was unable to finish the pin. In the second period, up 9-2, Germain finally pinned Cromier at 3:30 into the match. “I was really happy to finish as Bartow’s first female state champion.”

“With the number of girls participating in this tournament, and the level of competition, it shows how wrestling continues to be one of the fastest growing sports for females,” Coach Germain said. “

With women’s freestyle in the Olympics since 2004, and with colleges adding women’s wrestling as a varsity sport, I’m sure women’s wrestling will only continue to become more mainstream.

“Katie is already planning visits to two colleges with women’s wrestling programs during spring break. It will be interesting to see what sport, judo or wrestling, she can excel in the most.”
