CASTLE ROCK — Rochester got its highest team finish at an invitational tournament since 2005 here Saturday, scoring 152 points to finish second behind just the host Rockets at the 36th-Annual Jim Bair Memorial Invitational wrestling tournament.

Liezl Mondoc, though, was tabbed Warrior of the Weekend by Rochester coach Les Eastman. On the girls side Mondoc bumped a weight class — from 130 to 135 — to face better competition, and wound up defeating an opponent that took third at the state tournament last year to win the classification.

Female entry among those ready to battle for county mat supremacy

The Vintage wrestling team has a good chance to pull off a couple of firsts at today’s fifth annual King of the Valley Tournament.

The Crushers’ 103-pounder could make the name of the event confusing for the first time – if she happens to go unbeaten and reign over her Valley competition.
Yes, the dual-meet tournament between Vintage, Napa, Justin-Siena and St. Helena -- which kicks off at 4:30 p.m. at Napa High's Messner Gym -- will have a girl, Jonnarose Palma, competing in it for the first time.

If she goes undefeated on the day and makes the All-Valley team, will a certain local hospital let her have its name, “Queen of the Valley?”
The tournament was founded as a way to determine the best wrestlers in the Valley at each weight class. Those with the best records on the day make up the All-Valley team.

Palma, a sophomore, is 20-6 with 17 pins in girls tournaments this season in the 114-pound weight class, but Vintage head coach Bob Musante said she’ll make weight at 103 pounds today.
“We’ll have a full roster at least, and that gives us a good chance if everybody wrestles good,” Musante said. “We have a lot of camaraderie this year. There’s a good feeling about this team.”

Along with Palma in the lightest division, Musante said the Crushers will have Joseph Pasco (112 pounds), Nick Rapacon (119), Casey Jones (125), Dylan Solis (130), John McIntyre (135), Nick Mills (140), Andulfo Topete (145), Zack Zuniga (152), Jovany Herrera (160), Ryan Leija (171), Steven Arrambide (189), Josh Knoell (215) and Ruben Herrera (275).

Christy Barnes

Christy Barnes was a female wrestler who joined the team despite much protest from Coach Sanski. She and Zack dated, and Zack was embarrassed when Christy beat up a valley punk who was trying to strangle Zack. Although Christie and Slater’s relationship was purely wrestling-related, Jessie ended up getting jealous as the two spent time together in the gym. When Jessie insulted Christy but realized she was wrong about who the female wrestler liked, she joined forces with Zack to convince Christy to rejoin the team, and Zack resumed dating her. Christy did not appear in any future episodes.
