ATHERTON, Calif. – Oklahoma City University remained unbeaten on the season in women’s wrestling duals, beating Simon Fraser (British Columbia) 28-13, Menlo (Calif.) 41-4 and Yakima Valley (Wash.) 45-1 on Saturday at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.

The Stars moved to 18-0-1 this season. OCU defeated Simon Fraser, which had tied the Stars earlier this season.

Simon Fraser tied OCU 16-16 on Oct. 23 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Stars improved to 2-0-1 against Simon Fraser in 2009-10.

OCU’s Brittany Delgado, a sophomore from Simpsonville, S.C., upended the top-ranked individual at 82 kilograms, Hillary Greening, in the 95-kilogram match. Delgado entered the season as the third-ranked individual at 82.

Na’Tasha Umemoto at 51 and Michaela Hutchison at 55 picked up pins against Simon Fraser.

Against Menlo, OCU benefited from five pins and a forfeit. Hutchison’s fall in 27 seconds over Jacque Davis highlighted the Stars’ pins.

Brittney Roberts defeated Rebecca Medeiros by fall in 31 seconds at 72. Delgado also pinned Brittany Caoile in 1:36 at 95.

At 63, Audrey Morehouse finished off Rachael Skrotch in 1:44, while Ashley Hudson pinned Kayla Garza 1:22 into the second period of the 59-kilo bout.

Katherine Fulp-Allen prevailed over Umemoto in the feature match of the dual. Fulp-Allen is the top-ranked defending national champion at 51, while Umemoto entered as the third-ranked individual at 51. Fulp-Allen won the final two periods after Umemoto took the first period.

Against Yakima Valley, OCU allowed only one team point for the third time ever. The Stars shut out Wisconsin-River Falls 45-0 on Dec. 6, 2008.

The Stars picked up six falls. Stephanie Waters started OCU rolling with a fall in 11 seconds at 44 kilos.

Delgado finished her bout in 20 seconds, while Hudson won in 37 seconds.

Roberts, Tessa Plana at 67 and Melissa Simmons at 82 each earned second-period falls.

OCU compete in the Menlo Lady Oaks Open Tournament on Sunday in Atherton, Calif.

MIDDLEBURY — Wrestlers from local schools won five weight classes at Middlebury Union High School’s 38th Annual Hubie Wagner Invitational, while the 18 teams’ coaches voted Vergennes sophomore Cara Strona the tournament’s outstanding wrestler, and Otter Valley junior George Mitchell won a title and his 100th match.

In claiming the 96-pound title, Strona became only the second female wrestler to win a weight class at the MUHS tournament, joining Courtney Martell, the older sister of Strona’s senior teammate, Kori Martell.

Strona went 4-0, winning her first match and her semifinal and final bouts with powerful first-period pins. But her most dramatic victory was 16-15 over Mount Anthony’s Kyle Fletcher. Strona struggles at times with a breathing problem and had to tough out a bout that had to be stopped twice briefly to let her recover. When it was over her teammates all jumped to their feet, cheering.

Also winning a weight class for VUHS was junior Ricky Karzmarczyk, who racked up five pins and a 6-0 record at 125 pounds. In all, the Commodores had four finalists, with junior Aaron Desabrais second at 215 and junior Morgan Stinchfield second at 152, as VUHS finished third for the best placing among local and Vermont teams.

The team from Granville, N.Y., was first with 193 points, followed by Cohoes, N.Y., at 179.5 and VUHS at 173.5; Cambridge, N.Y., at 151 was fourth, MUHS took fifth with 139.5, and Otter Valley was sixth with 139. Mount Abraham’s small and inexperienced team scored 18 points.

The Tigers saw two wrestlers reach the podium with dominant performances. Senior Kaden Odell won at 145 pounds with a 6-0 record that included five pins and a win by a major decision, and junior Bryan Ashley-Selleck made hay at 152 pounds with five first-period pins — including a 22-second takedown in his semifinal match — and a solid 8-0 victory over Stinchfield in the final.

“Bryan’s performance did receive some consideration for outstanding wrestler,” said MUHS coach Jon Ashley.

Otter Valley was led by Mitchell, a state champ at 125 a year ago. He won at 130 pounds to remain undefeated this season. He earned his 100th win on a Wednesday morning pin, putting him on track to challenge former teammate Jesse Bilodeau for the school’s career record.
Mitchell reached the final with three pins, a technical fall and a major decision, but faced a tough challenge in the championship match against Paul Billings of Cohoes, a N.Y. Sectional finalist. In what Ashley called the most exciting match of the tournament, Mitchell prevailed in four overtimes, 10-9.

OV had one other finalist, junior Seth Harrington, who compiled a 5-1 record and racked up four pins at 112.

Mount Abe’s best performance came from junior heavyweight Andrew Spooner, who took fourth. Freshman Matthew Sweeney also fared well, compiling a 3-2 record with three pins at 125 pounds and just missing the podium.

Each of the local coaches found something to like in the tournament.

Ashley noted that MUHS senior Jarrod Ashley took third in the competitive 130-pound weight class, while Kody Murray and Hans Mueller also wrestled well and just missed placing. Meanwhile, he noted Ashley-Selleck and Odell continued their strong efforts this winter.

“Bryan and Kaden put in pretty dominant performances,” Ashley said.

Mount Abe’s Kevin Micklas said his young athletes benefited from the tournament’s round-robin format, which ensures that all wrestlers see plenty of mat time. He sees his individual wrestlers making progress.

“We’re a young team,” Micklas said. “We’re coming along.”

OV coach Bob Bathalon said he also sees improvement, although he would like to see his team’s less-experienced wrestlers take more of a cue from the Otter veterans about how to approach their matches with attitude.

“My younger guys are stepping up ... We’ve just got to keep them coming,” he said. “We’ve just got to get them to where the other guys are, and we’ll be fine.”

Bathalon believes the possibility is there for the younger wrestlers to tap some of their potential in time for the state tournament.

“February 26 and 27,” he said. “That’s what I tell my boys we look for. We’ve just got to keep wrestling.”

VUHS coach Nate Kittredge is fielding a smaller team than in the past two years, but VUHS has been highly competitive because several wrestlers have not only been successful, but wrestling aggressively, winning big and scoring extra points.

“We’re definitely a big-point team. We get those pins when we need it. We get those major decisions, the tech falls. We get those big points. That’s what keeps us in a lot of the tournaments,” he said.

In all, Kittredge said the Commodores have made the winter fun for him.

“I’m very proud of how the kids have been wrestling,” he said. “They fight hard. I couldn’t ask for any more.”

Other local wrestlers earning spots on the podium were OV’s Joey McCoy, who took third at 103, and Commodore Simon Flynn, who placed third at 140 with a 6-1 record and five pins.

Local wrestlers winning at least one match at the two-day tournament were:

• Derek St. George, MUHS, 2-3 at 112.
• Ben Cook, OV, 2-3 at 119.
• Matt Karzmarczyk, VUHS, 1-2 at 130.
• Kenny Micklas, Mt. Abe, 1-2 at 130.
• J.J. Ciaramitaro, MUHS, 1-2 at 140.
• Alex Alger, OV, 3-1 at 140 with three pins.
• Kori Martell, VUHS, 2-2 at 140.
• James Greeno, OV, 1-3 at 152.
• Luke Nadeau, MUHS, 1-4 at 160.
• Eddie Mulis, VUHS, 1-4 at 160.
• Tommy Charnley, Mt. Abe, 1-3 at 189.
• Alex Smith, OV, 3-2 with three pins at 189.
• Clayton Childers, VUHS, 2-2 at 189.
• Evan Bathalon, OV, 1-2 at 215.
• Shaun Mills, OV, 3-2 at 285.

Western wrestling head coach Ray Takahashi has pinned yet another accolade, being named to London Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best's New Year's honours list.

Takahashi, who has coached the Mustangs since 1985, has helped the program thrive under his leadership and guidance, with OUA team titles in 1990, ‘91, ‘93, and one CIS title in 1990. The women mustangs won their first OUA team title in 2007. He earned OUA coach of the year honours six times and CIS coach of the year honor in 1990.

Ray Takahashi

Under his leadership, Takahashi, a faculty member in the School of Kinesiology, established the Wrestling Wall of Fame in 1985, implemented the women’s program in 1996-97, and inaugurated the Leyshon Trophy (Most Dedicated Wrestler), and the Leyshon Award (financial need award).

As a member of London-Western and a Mustang, Takahashi won four CIAU (CIS) titles, and competed in numerous international competitions representing Canada. He was named Canadian Wrestler of the year twice (1978, 1984) and was inducted into the Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1991.

After his third Olympic team in 1984 (placed 4th), Takahashi returned to Western to pursue graduate work, which led to the Mustang coaching position.

Bulldogs wrestle well at tournaments
by Matt Long 1/4/09

Folsom High’s wrestling team had success in various tournaments over the holiday week.

At the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno on Dec. 29-30, the Bulldogs placed 16th out of 97 teams with only 10 wrestlers competing. Connor Pollock placed fourth in the 103-pound division and Dillon Fader ended up eighth at 171 pounds, both earning a medal for their efforts.

On the girls’ side, Tianna Camous competed in the Lady Lancer Tournament in Manteca and won all five of her matches by pins at 138 pounds, all in under 40 seconds, and earned the tournament’s outstanding wrestler award. Camous also placed second in the Queen of the Mat Tournament in Antioch, while Katelyn Rosenbauer finished seventh at 119.

Despite not having a full roster, Folsom more than held its own at the huge Sierra Nevada Classic, featuring teams from seven states. Folsom’s goal coming into the tournament was a top-10 finish and though they fell short of that goal, Collier said it was still a good performance by the team and a valuable experience for many of the squad’s younger wrestlers.

“We were missing a few of our starters who I think would have helped push our team score back into the top-10,” Collier said. “I thought all of the guys who went competed well and got some great experience at a big tournament. Half of our lineup consisted of sophomores, so all in all it will help us in the long run.”

Pollock, the team’s highest finisher, won eight of 10 matches during the tournament, losing twice to Tyler Tate of Spring Creek, NV. After winning his first match, Pollock dropped a 14-12 decision in overtime to Tate before winning seven straight matches in the consolation bracket. In the match for third place, Tate beat Pollock again, this time 8-2, as Pollock finished in fourth place.

In Pollock’s eight wins, six came by pins.

Fader’s tournament was similar to Pollock’s in that he had a long, hard fight through the consolation bracket. Fader, like Pollock, lost his second match before winning five straight matches in the consolation bracket. Fader then dropped his final two matches to place eighth.
