PUNE: It’s not that often that the city of Pune witnesses international wrestling events. But off late, the enthusiasts have been able to witness some international wrestling, although not at the senior level.

First it was the Commonwealth Youth Games last year, and then the Asian Cadet wrestling, that got over on Sunday. And, there was one name all the local fans chanted on both occasions-of Haryana wrestler Deepak.

The 17 year-old, who had won the CYG gold in 46kg, clinched one of the five gold medals the hosts won in boys’ freestyle event to emerge the overall champions. India had won the overall title in the girls’ category on Saturday.

Nine of the 10 Indian wrestlers won medal for the country in the freestyle event, which, according to coach Raj Singh Chhikara, was “the target.”

Action against officials

After the fiasco of Indian girl Vinesh, who was forced to fight her gold medal bout twice on Saturday, the Asian Associated Wrestling Council (AAWC) president Kim Chang Kew has accepted to making a “huge mistake.”

“The entire episode has been a big embarrassment. We have formed a committee to make a detailed enquiry of the entire issue and those who are guilty will be punished,” Kim said.

Vinesh was asked to play her gold medal bout again after winning it in the afternoon, as all the finals were supposed to be played in the evening.

FILA (world wrestling body) technical instructor Kim Ik Jong also agreed that officials and local organisers were not aware of rules and said he will report the incident to FILA. “Fila’s next meeting is supposed to be held next month, and the issue of Vinesh will surely be discussed,” Jong said.
