Arrighi,
Bonnet, Lommori and Ross earn top YHS student-athlete awards
June 5, 2009
The wrestling awards were given to seniors Rachael Skroch
for the Larry Peables Award, given to an inspirational performer, and to Wesley
Taliaferro for the Mike Lommori award that goes to the top wrestler.
Skroch: The Peables award goes to a wrestler who is deemed
to be hard working, inspirational and improved. Skroch struggled with injuries
and ailments most of the season but returned to participate in the league
tournament.
She plans to attend Menlo College in the Bay Area and
wrestle on the women's wrestling team. Last week she also received the Ron
Banta Memorial Scholarship, in memory of a past successful YHS wrestler along
with the USA Nevada Wrestling Scholarship.

Adeline Gray, a U.S. Olympic Education Center
(USOEC) freestyle resident, won the World Team Trials (WTT) May 30-31 at the
Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, IA at 67 kg which qualified her to
compete in the Sr. World Championships in Denmark September 23-25.
In May, Gray, an 18 year old high school graduate, also qualified for the Jr.
World Championships to be held in Turkey July 31-August 8. This marks the first
time a USOEC freestyle wrestler has made both the Senior and Junior World
Championships teams in the same year and might also be the first time any USA
Women has accomplished this feat.
Last year in 2008, Gray won the Jr. World Championships, FILA Jr. Nationals,
and Jr. Nationals as a junior in high school and next year she will train in
Colorado Springs at the U.S. Olympic Training center as an incoming freshman in
college. She won the 2009 versions of Sr. Nationals and FILA Jr. Nationals. She
was also written up in the June edition of USA Wrestler - the official
publication of USA Wrestling.
For her efforts at the WTT, Gray also qualified for USA Wrestling's Sr.
National Team, which recognizes the top 3 athletes at each weight class by
providing additional financial support, in most cases, along with several
international competitions for the 2009-2010 season.
Several of Gray's USOEC team mates, who placed in the top 3 at the WTT, will
join her on USA Wrestling's Women's National Team: Alyssa Lampe, 2nd at 48 kg;
Schuyler Brown, 3rd at 59 kg; Helen Maroulis, 3rd at 63 kg; and Erin Clodgo,
3rd at 72 kg.
In February, 1989, the U.S. Olympic Committee named Northern Michigan
University (NMU) as the nation's only United States Olympic Education Center
(USOEC). The USOEC's main focus is the resident athlete training program, where
athletes actively train for the Olympic Games while also continuing their
education.
Generally, athletes in this program must be nationally ranked and also approved
by their national governing body (NGB), the USOEC, and NMU. The USOEC has
resident athlete training programs in freestyle wrestling, boxing, short track
speedskating, Greco-Roman wrestling, and weightlifting.

5/31/09 The Women’s Wrestling Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands carry tradition everywhere they go. When you hear talk about women’s collegiate wrestling, the Patriots are consistently mentioned. Coach Kip Flanik just helped that reputation by signing California native Jamila McBride.Jamila has multiple tournament wins under her belt including the California Women’s State Championship, the USGWA Oregon State Championship, the Northern California Women’s Regional tournament, and the USGWA California State Championship, all in 2008. She also finished as runner up in the USGWA Washington State Championship and the USGWA Women’s Nationals in 2008. In 2009, McBride took 2nd in the California Women’s State Championship and 1st in the Northern California Women’s Regional tournament. She was named to the honor roll at her high school from 2005 to 2009 and was also named captain of the high school men’s team from 2006-2009. A varsity letter winner in wrestling, Jamila also was named the H.E.R.O. Award winner from 2007 to 2009. The H.E.R.O. Award is earned when a teacher chooses a student out of all their classes who they feel has shown excellence in academics and character and has gone above and beyond what is expected of them academically and socially. University of the Cumberlands Head Women’s Wrestling Coach Kip Flanik commented, “Jamila is a very talented upper weight from wrestling rich California. She is exactly the type of student athlete we look for at the University of the Cumberlands. Tough, intelligent, and very motivated! I expect great things from her.” To follow Jamila, the Patriot Women’s Wrestling team, and other Patriot athletics please visit www.ucumberlands.edu/athletics.
