TAIYUAN, China, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2009 Women's Wrestling World Cup will kick off in northern China's Shanxi Province on Saturday. The two-day tournament has attracted more than 100 athletes from eight countries and regions, such as Canada, Japan, Ukraine, Russia, Mongolia and the host China. Up to now, all the preparations for the Cup have been completed, sources with local government said. The draw made in a press conference on Friday divided the eight teams into two groups: Japan, China, Belarus and the United States; Canada, Mongolia, Ukraine and Russia. Winners of the two groups will finally strive for the title. As one of the highest-level worldwide wrestling competitions, the World Cup was designed only for team event and only the top eight teams of the world can get the tickets to compete, according to the regulations made by the International Wrestling Association. |
Guildford's Aso and Seveh Palani are making wrestling a family sport one headlock at a time.
Seveh and her brother each put in gold-medal performances at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Championships held in Hampton, Virginia March 13 to 15.
Aso, 22, dominated his competition in the 125lb weight class, with five wins and no losses.

Seveh, 19, came out on top in the 112lb weight class, with three wins and no losses. The Palanis were representing the Douglas College wrestling team.
"Performing well at a tournament like the NCWA gives us a huge amount of momentum going into the Canadian National Championships this weekend in Regina. It's a huge mental breakthrough," says coach Steve Rose.
"It was nerve-wracking, but it does give me some confidence for the nationals, which will be 10 times harder," says Seveh, who was a returning champion at the NCWA.
While brothers often perform well as teammates in wrestling, it's less common to see male and female siblings on the circuit, says Rose.
Even more unique, says their coach, is that the Palanis are Kurdish.
"You don't see many Muslim girls wrestling. The numbers are pretty slim," Seveh agrees.
She and Aso, both General Studies students at Douglas College, have a younger brother Zanah, who is a member of the wrestling team at Guildford Park Secondary school, where Seveh also helps coach the girls' team.
"Aso definitely helps to push and support me. It's one of the main advantages of being on the team together," says Seveh.
Seveh and Aso are competing in the Junior and Senior National Championships respectively, which run until Sunday.

Maysville
wrestler heads to national
competition
"I
was nervous at
first, and I kind-of put myself down because I thought I didn't have a
chance,"
said the Maysville High School sophomore, who is also a student in the
Career
Connections Program at Mid-East Career and Technology Center. "Then
after
I wrestled her in the first match, my adrenaline kicked in and I knew I
could
do it. I told myself you're doing this for you and you're representing
your
school, so do good and don't give up."
After
pinning Monica Marco, Dennis was named the new state champion last
weekend in
Mount Vernon. Now the first-year grappler is off to the United States
Girls' Wrestling
Association Nationals in Ypsilanti, Mich., this weekend.
"It
surprised me, but I've worked my butt off," Dennis said. "I look
forward to seeing different people from different places wrestle, and
it's a
chance to improve and get better."
What
began as a secret athletic pursuit has turned into a victorious passion
for the
local grappler.
"My
basketball coach asked me why I never tried wrestling, and I said my
mom
probably wouldn't like it," she said. "My mom was in the hospital at
the time, and my dad didn't say too much (about wrestling); but I went
to
wrestling practice anyway. At first my mom wasn't too happy about it,
but once
she saw me out there she was OK with it."
Battling
it out with the boys doesn't intimidate Dennis, as many of her
wrestling
teammates are also her football teammates. She has been playing
football since
she was in third grade.
"I
like the intensity and proving that I have the strength and ability to
beat
someone in a competition," she said. "It's fun and I enjoy doing it.
Wrestling isn't a sport for me - it's a hobby. I do this every day with
my
brother and my dog."
"It's
been a rewarding season to watch her; she's put in a lot of hard work
and
determination," added Kim Dennis, Mandy's mother. "She's also a
scholar athlete with a 3.75 GPA. We're very proud of her, and we know
she will
represent Ohio well. This is an opportunity of a lifetime."
Clint
Fox, Maysville athletic director who coached Mandy in football this
season, is
also eager for Mandy's trip to nationals.
"Mandy
stands out from the crowd; she's an individual who works hard and comes
to any
challenge head-on with dedication," he said. "It's exciting that
she's going to nationals because all year she's competed against boys
and
excelled; it's neat that she can go up against girls."
"I'm
the only girl in the MVL, and I've had to earn people's respect," Mandy
added. "I want to thank all of the fans who support me."

Thursday, March 19 We arrived in Taiyuan, China yesterday. Our trip Started early Monday morning. We left Colorado Springs at 6:00 am - and Left Chicago for Beijing at about 12:30 pm on Monday. We arrived the Chicago Airport and the Team got a workout in at the Chicago Airport. It made the flight a little more tolerable. The flight lasted about 13 hours straight to Beijing. Once we arrived Beijing, we had the evening to acclimate a bit. The team went on a shopping trip to the silk market. If you have ever been there, it is a workout in itself. But the women enjoyed themselves and got out and walked some of the jet lag off. The next morning the girls worked out and some went shopping after that before we left for Taiyuan. Thursday was the first time we were back on the mat. Last night, we went to a health club and this morning we ran and wrestled in the parking lot of the hotel. The food is good and the accomodations are very good as well. I will keep you all in the loop as things move forward. Weigh-ins are tomorrow and wrestling starts on Saturday. I have a good feeling about this team. Right now, they are being very professional in their approach. |
