UM-MORRIS WOMEN WRESTLERS CLAIM ALL-AMERICAN
HONORS
usa wrestling 3/27/2001
Lake Orion, MI - Four UM-Morris women wrestlers claimed All-American
honors in the 2nd Annual USGWA Collegiate National Championships in
Lake Orion, Michigan on Sunday, March 25.
Katie Downing (Pendleton, IN) won national championship honors at 160
pounds winning four matches all by fall to claim the title. Downing
pinned teammate Samantha Branka (Lincoln Park, MI) in 1:24 in the finals.
Branka went 3-1 in the competition to place second, for the second straight
year.
Katie Ross (Greensboro, NC) placed third at the 130 pound weight division.
Ross wrestled to a 3-1 record in the tournament, losing only to Jill
Remiticado
of Pacific University in the semi-finals. Ross claimed the bronze medal
with a
8-0 major decision over Jacquie Clement of Delaware.
Alexandra Augustin (Naples, FL) placed third at 140 pounds. Augustin
enjoyed
at great tournament recording four falls and a 4-1 record. Augustin only
loss
came to Kate Zeitler of Cumberland College (KY). Augustin pinned Jessica
Lawson of Ohio in just 53 seconds to claim the bronze medal.
The USGWA event was a collegiate "folkstyle" event, different from the
freestyle
wrestling the UM-Morris women's team usually compete in, but nevertheless,
the Cougars lived up to their potential, wrestling to a 14-3 record in the
two day
tournament. "The girls wrestled well," said coach Doug Reese. "We don't
train in this style of wrestling, and only spent one hour on it last week in
practice,
but they are tough competitors. It showed in the results. It was a good
tune
up for our upcoming University National Championship next week in Evanston,
Illinois."
The UM-Morris women travel to Evanston, Illinois at Northwestern University
to compete in the 5th Annual USA Wrestling's University National
Championships.
UM-Morris has won three of the four national team titles in this event.
