Grappling for girls;
At McCaskey, championship meet shows women can be as tough on mat as men

When Jennifer Tranger became the first female wrestler on the McCaskey High
School varsity wrestling team back in 1997, nobody laughed.

"They kind of cheered," Tranger, now 19, recalled Saturday. "But I think
they thought I wouldn't last."

Both Tranger and the sport of female wrestling not only lasted -- they
prospered.

On Saturday, the second annual Middle Atlantic Folkstyle Wrestling
Championships for Women was held at McCaskey High School, giving young women
the same opportunity young men have long had to put each other in headlocks
and half nelsons in a seriously athletic way.

No Jello. No mud. Nothing flashy at all, except the sparkle in the eyes of
young women who took home medals in 17 divisions after a full day of
wrestling on two 40-by-40-foot mats in the McCaskey gymnasium.

Last year's event drew 47 participants. This year's drew 68 from seven
states, including two high school teams (from private Philadelphia schools
Germantown Friends and The George School) and one college club team (from
Messiah). There are no public high school or college varsity women's
wrestling teams in Pennsylvania. There are three college varsity women's
wrestling teams in the U.S.

The sport only got going in 1989, when FILA, the international governing
board of wrestling, ruled that women must be allowed to participate in
amateur wrestling. A federal mandate called "Title 9" from the early 1970s
had already allowed interested females to participate on men's teams at the
high school and college level if no women's teams existed.

"It's like hockey," said McCaskey wrestling coach and tournament director
Jonathan Mitchell. "Women had to start in hockey by going out for men's
teams. And look at them now!" (Women's ice hockey is now an Olympic event
and the U.S. team won the gold medal in 1998 in Nagano, Japan).

Saturday's folkstyle tournament had specific rules about things like stance
and hand-placement, unique to the U.S. "That's why it's called "folkstyle'
as opposed to, say, freestyle or Roman-Greco," explained Mitchell. "There
are literally hundreds of styles of wrestling around the world."

As the bodies fell, there were some bloody noses and sprained muscles. Girls
as small as 45 pounds and as young as seven years grunted in concentration
as they tried to pin their opponents shoulders to the mat. Participants were
dressed in a type of stretchy leotard called a "singlet," with hair braided
or stuffed under smooth nylon caps.

"The difference between guys and girls on the mat?" asked PIAA referree Ray
Kahler between rounds. "The older guys wear a jock strap and the older girls
wear a sports bra. Really, there is no difference. Some of these girls are
really good," added Kahler, who coaches wrestling at Garden Spot High
School. "I wish they were on my team."

"When I started out, at Lincoln Junior High School," said Jennifer Tranger,
a 2000 McCaskey grad who now works at Donnelly Printing. "A lot of the boys
didn't want to wrestle me or they'd threaten to pound me. The coach had to
tell them, "You're wrestling her, and I don't want to hear it.'"

Tranger had the advantage of having "practiced" on seven older brothers.

She decided to go out for wrestling after managing her junior high boys
wrestling team for a season. "I thought, "I can do this,'" she said Saturday
before winning her first match in the open division, heavyweight
classification. Tranger is 5 feet 8 inches and weighs 187 well-muscled
pounds.

"But in my first high school match, a guy from Conestoga Valley pretty much
picked me up and slammed me down. It's an illegal move, and I looked out at
all those people watching and I wanted to cry so bad, but I thought, "Girls
don't cry, not in a man's sport.'"

One Massachusetts wrestler, whose father proudly announced that his daughter
had a 14-8 win-loss record against boys this year, brought her good luck
teddy bear. The bear wore a tag that read: "Friends don't let friends play
basketball. Shoot the Habit. Wrestle."

"If you're not good with a ball, wrestling can be the sport for you," agreed
Mitchell, who works as dean of students at Lafayette Elementary School when
not coaching wrestling at McCaskey.

About 100 spectators cheered the elementary kids (three-minute matches), the
middle schoolers (four-minute matches) and the high school and open
candidates (six-minute matches) as volunteers from the Lancaster Mat Club, a
booster club for all city wrestlers and the event's sponsor, kept score.

"This is my first time actually competing," said Angie Dennison, 27, a
heavyweight contender at 5 feet, 8 inches and 227 pounds, as well as a Boys
Club wrestling coach for her two young sons. "They didn't have wrestling for
girls when I was in school."

"It's not a sport for everyone," said Tranger. "Some boys will think you're
trying to act tough. Some girls will go "Ooo, no, it's sweaty and sticky.'
But I say it's the only legal way to kick somebody's butt."

Spade, Pa.; 55 pounds, Sarah Dorsay, N.J; 62 pounds, Kendra Sutherland, Pa.;
75 pounds, Emily Smith, Ohio; middle school class, 97 pounds, Carly
Lebowitz, N.Y., 120 pounds, Angela Dollar, Pa.; 142 pounds, Briana Conway,
Pa.; high school class, 100 pounds, Reona Kumagai, N.Y.; 107 pounds, Rachel
Groft, Pa.; 114 pounds, Erin Soli, Pa.; 130 pounds, Wendy Casey, N.Y.; 139
pounds Samantha Golt, Va.; 157 pounds, Brandy Golt, Va.; open class (college
and beyond), 115 pounds, Leah Lebowitz, N.Y.; 140 pounds, Sissy Lyle, Pa.;
160 pounds, Rachel Glogowski from the Messiah College team; and heavyweight,
Angie Dennison (the only winner from Lancaster County).
