Dear Female Wrestlers in all over the world
Yayoi Urno
![]() |
I hope this message finds you in good health.
For those of you that do not know me, my name is Yayoi Urano. I wrestled for Kyotaru in Japan for many years and attended many world championships with the Japanese team. Most recently (since March, 1997) I trained with the Bears Wrestling Club in Edmonton, Canada with coach Vang Ioannides. Unfortunately, when I went back to Japan for the 1998 national championships, I hurt my knee and had knee surgery soon after.
I went back to Canada and continued wrestling for the Bears. Because of my knee injury, I decided to retire January 6, 1999.
I currently coach the Edmonton (cadet/juvenile/junior) Wrestling Club with my fiance Ron Odagaki.
I have been engaged with Ron since March 27, 1998, and we are getting married in July this year. He was a former University wrestler in Edmonton on the Bears club. He
won the Canada West University Championship in 1998 at 52 kg.
A message to the younger wrestlers: Wrestling, like life, is something you make for yourselves. Make things work for yourselves instead of waiting for things to happen.
Opportunities are there for you to take.
Thank you to all my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and referees for your kindness and all of the fond memories you have given me. To my opponents, thank you for pushing me and challenging me to want to become a better wrestler.
One of my favorite parts about wrestling is being able to travel. I have met many interesting people and made many friends on my trips. I encourage young wrestlers to try to meet new people and learn new experiences.
If you want to visit Canada, I will try to help you make arrangements.
Thank you for this opportunity and I wish you all the best.
Yours truly
Yayoi Urano
(& Ron Odagaki)

@Yayoi Urano got six gold medals at the world championships from 1990 to 1996 except 1992. Six gold medals are the best record in the medalist ranking in the world. She experienced judo in high school and university days and could convert that ability to wrestling.
@After 1992, when she finished silver medal, she trained harder and became stronger and won four year straight victories. We didn't feel any atmosphere being defeated in the 1996 world championships.
@However Kyotaru company she worked bankrupted in January, 1997. So she went to Canada to study English. She could not train enough and finished 4th in 1997 world championships. Unluckly she suffered from knee injury in 1998 and was said to be retired.
@She won 63 kg at the 1998 Clansman International Championships in Canada. Will she be able to come back?
