Caprock Invitational scheduled for today

The Caprock Lady Longhorns will be hosting the Caprock Invitational today, starting at 8 a.m. at the Caprock gym.

The meet will attract eight different teams and a few quality wrestlers from other states.

Teams scheduled to compete are Caprock, Tascosa, Amarillo High and Palo Duro, Arlington High, Arlington Sam Houston, Hereford and Los Alamos, N.M. Also scheduled to compete is Cathilee Albert of Colorado and Tocarro Montgomery of Ohio, Albert is the United States Cadet champion and Montgomery is ranked No. 1 in the world, according to Caprock wrestling coach Scott Tankersley.

Although they are in somewhat of a rebuilding stage this season, the Lady Longhorns are the defending state champions. They are led by Marie Hernandez, the defending state heavyweight champion.

Arlington Sam Houston was last year's state runner-up and the Palo Duro Lady Dons finished third. Palo Duro is coming off a 33-15 dual match win over Caprock Thursday. The Lady Dons have defending state champion Kruncy Inthirath in the 95-pound weight division.

Palo Duro wins Caprock Invitational

The Palo Duro Lady Dons showed why they're ranked No. 1 in the state, winning the Caprock Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Caprock gym.

In winning the tournament with 132 points, the Lady Dons outpointed defending state champion Caprock and runner-up Arlington Sam Houston. Arlington Sam Houston was second with 92 points and Caprock was third with 75 points. Tascosa was fourth with 44points.

Local wrestlers winning their weight divisions were; Monica Harris of Caprock (104), Deedra Puentes, Caprock (112), Laureen Lindsey, Palo Duro (121); Houston Shepard, Tascosa (140) and Casey Britten, Palo Duro (167).

Rachael Rodriguez of Hereford won the 130-pound division.

Toccara Montgomery of Ohio, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the United States, was named the Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 150-pound division.

Davison wrestlers win dual tourney

Davison went 3-0-1 in winning the Rochester Adams wrestling duals Saturday. The Cardinals tied Novi 30-30, the team they beat in the Division I state finals last year.

Davison beat Utica Eisenhower 63-15, Rochester Adams 37-33 and Fraser 62-18. Adams beat Novi 34-31.

Going 4-0 for Davison were: John Whitman (125), Chase Metcalf (130), Joe Whitman (135), Chad Roush (160), Casey Streeter (171) and Adam Wilmoth (189). Roush was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler. Metcalf is 26-0 and Joe Whitman is 28-1. Paul Donahoe (103), Keristen Labelle (112) and Dustin Wells (152) were 3-1.

Kearsley went 5-0 to win the 31st annual Bendle Wrestling Invitational. The six-team tournament changed from an invitational format to a round robin team format for the first time.

Bendle finished second, going 4-1. Kearsley beat Bendle 45-30. Bendle beat Powers Catholic 37-34, Woodhaven 51-28, Brooklyn Columbia Central 40-30 and Imlay City's B team 53-30.

Mike Ingram (125), Nick Abbey (145) and Chad Abbey (152) all went 5-0 for Bendle (12-12). Bendle's Matt Taylor (103) and Allen McMillan (112) both went 4-1.


Lapeer West went 5-0 to win the six-team Roseville dual meet tournament. The state's top-ranked Division II team remained unbeaten by beating Wyandotte Roosevelt 66-10, Roseville 60-15, Mount Clemens 64-12, Southgate Anderson 52-18 and Center Line 73-6.

Seven Panthers went 5-0 - James Ranger (112), David Schlaud (119), Jason Fellows (125), Jesse Reader (130), James Kish (145), Nick Sierakowski (160) and Roger Kish (171). Chris Houle (275) was 4-0, Steve Lampar (103) 4-1 and Chad Roge (140) 3-1.


Millington went 0-5 at the Alma Duals, losing to Dowagiac 60-15, Midland 54-22, Grandville 73-0,

Alma 54-24 and Mount Pleasant 61-12. Justin Shinabarger went 4-1 and Scott Daley went 3-2, collecting his 100th career win.


New Lothrop finished third at the 16-team Athens Invitational. Bronson won, while Caledonia was second. The Hornets had three champions -Mark Gross at 275, Brad Gardner at 103 pounds and Tim Ebenhoeh at 112.

Hartland's A team had 10 individual champions in winning the 22nd annual Lake Fenton Invitational with 290.5 points. Hartland's B team, which also had one champion, was second in the 10-team field with 171.5. Byron was third, Central fourth, Southwestern Academy sixth, Bentley eighth, Lake Fenton ninth and Southwestern Academy 10th.

Byron's Eric Bancroft (160) and Aaron Bancroft (215) and Southwestern Academy's Washington Jackson (189) also won titles.
