Half Moon Bay to challenge Terra Nova for championship
January 06, 2001
By Richard Motroni
CORRESPONDENT
Standing in the way of Terra Nova reclaiming the Peninsula Athletic League
wrestling crown is a team that knows a thing or two about defending
championships.
Once again, Half Moon Bay will play a deciding role on which school will
walk away with the trophy, only this time with a new coach. Matt Ballard
takes over from Tom Baker and it did not take long for the new coach to get
a sense of the type of program his predecessor developed.
"Basically, I got what coach Tom Baker created which is a bunch of
hard-working kids who train hard during the preseason and go to various
summer camps and just like to wrestle," Ballard said.
Like past Cougar teams, this group not only likes to wrestle, but also has
the talent to compete from the lightweights to the heavyweight division.
Team captain Mike Asche (145 pounds) returns for his senior year with a
wealth of experience, talent and leadership. Josh Brown (125) has solid
technique and wrestling intelligence that will be needed in a highly
competitive division. Chris Serrano (215) is exceptionally quick for an
upper weight, while heavyweight Roy Cockrell has speed and wrestling smarts.
Although a sophomore, Sam Temko is eyeing for a shot at the 135-pound title.
This was evident after an intense spring workout and summer camp. Equally
intense is Steven Steinhoff (152), a tough wrestler in a tough weight class.
Nick Rey (130) and Ben Gammon (119) are a pair of freshmen who display
impressive technique and fluid balance. Nate Rey could be a sleeper in the
145-pound class and Sarah Fulp-Allen (103) mixes flexibility with a great
knowledge about the sport.
