Stars pick up three lopsided dual wins

ATHERTON, Calif. – Ashley Sword and Lene Wood won matchups with ranked opponents in Oklahoma City University's 43-4 victory over Menlo (Calif.) on Saturday in the West-Midwest women's wrestling duals.
The Stars also knocked off Pacific 43-4 and Simon Fraser (British Columbia) 35-12 on Saturday.
Sword, a junior from West Palm Beach, Fla., pinned Ashley Evans-Smith of Menlo in 1:59 in a matchup of ranked wrestlers at 67 kilograms. Sword is ranked second in the nation, while Smith is seventh.
Wood, a freshman from Frisco, Texas, picked up a 2-0, 8-0 decision victory over Maria Henriquez. Wood is ranked second among collegiate women at 44 kilos, while Henriquez is sixth.
Carrie Clark, Briana Conway, Ashley Hudson, Marina Piccolotti and Karon Scott each had falls against Menlo.
"Briana Conway wrestled extremely well," OCU coach Archie Randall said. "Our new lineup performed well."
Hudson's pin of Jazzy Green in 1:29 highlighted OCU's victory over Pacific. Green is ranked fourth at 51.
Conway pinned Ariella Ing in 22 seconds at 63. Sword also won by fall in 30 seconds over Samantha Stych.
Against Simon Fraser, Erica Torres pinned Rita Fare in 40 seconds. Conway and Piccolotti each had falls in 55 seconds.
The Stars take on the U.S. Olympic Education Center on Friday at 7 p.m. in Marquette, Mich.

Junior Broncs face tough compeition in Deer Valley

The Parker Junior Broncs wrestling club competed at the Deer Valley Junior High Wrestling tournament on Dec. 1. The Deer Valley tournament is one of the toughest Junior High meets in the state with most of the state's best teams in attendnce.

As a team, the Junior Broncs took sixth place. Coming away with first was Reni Gallan, who won in the finals, 3-0, over a nationally rated boy. Taking second was Ryan Shatto, who was dominant until the final. Taking third was Javier Gomez who had a last second win, and a third place match that went into double overtime.

Taking fourth place was Billy Escoto, who did it the hard way by getting upset in his first match and then wrestling all the way back for fourth. Raymond Gomez and Brandon Shatto were only one match away from placing.

Also wrestling at the tournament were Mason Cribbs, Josh Saxon, Jesse Lucas, Derek Yarborough, and Dallas Wells. Each young wrestled battled hard.

The Napa Sheriff’s Activities League wrestling team took 15 grapplers to the 2007 Winter League Championships on Saturday at Springstowne Middle School in Vallejo.
The tournament featured nine mostly middle school-age teams from Napa, Solano, Lake, Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Though the majority of the Napa SAL’s wrestlers were elementary school boys and girls, they placed fifth in team points overall.

In the junior varsity competition, sixth-grader Hagen Bresse, 11, took third in the 112-pound weight class; fifth-grader Trenton Bresee, 10, was second with a 1-1 record at 85s; sixth-grader Noah Cushman, 12, was the rrunner-up at 90s; sixth-grader Maggie Douma, 11, took second in the 88-pound girls class, going 1-1 record with a 41-second pin in the second round; and third-grader Alyvia Fiske, 8, placed second in the girls 81-pound girls class with a 1-1 record and 8-7 overtime win.

Fourth-grader James Kenny, 10, was seond with a 1-1 record at 86 pounds; fifth-grader Alexis Macias, 10, triumphed in the girls 96-pound class; third-grader Dakota Macias, 8, finished third in the 78-pound class; third-grader Patrick Ramirez, 8, took home second- and third-place medals in the 60- and 63-pound weight classes, respectively, with a combined 1-3 record; fourth-grader Alec Richmond, 9, was third at 81s; and sixth-grader Caleb Tremblay, 11, took first place with a 2-0 record, on a pin and technical fall, at 93s.

At the varsity leve, eighth-grader Trace Denna, 14, placed eighth with an 0-2 mark in at 106 pounds; seventh-grader Chad Kilpatrick, 13, was first with a 3-0 record, including a pin, at 85s; seventh-grader JonVan Lucero, 11, finished 0-2 at 71s; and seventh-grader Anthony Schweitz, 13, was second with a 2-1 record at 111s, including 28- and 58-second pins.

The Napa SAL Wrestling Club practices from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Vintage High School cafeteria, and welcomes new members. There is no cost to participate. The club will hold its second annual middle school tournament at Justin-Siena High School on Dec. 8. The club is coached by Lieutenant Jean Donaldson, Deputy Dan Fiske, Deputy Jesse Ward, SHPD Officer Justin Tharp, Eric Jones, and Stephen Denna./Register

Vintage has five wrestlers ranked in the top eight statewide and Napa High has a pair joining them as well in the preseason rankings for California Women’s High School Wrestling, which were released by the California Women’s Wrestling Association.

Leading the way for Vintage is team captain Chelsi Aguayo, who begins the season ranked second in Northern California and fifth in the state at 126 pounds. Jean Rabaino is ranked fourth in the state at 154 pounds, while Heather Farace (118), Stephanie Garza (138), Rebecca Medeiros (189) and Melissa Cortes-Garcia (heavyweight) all begin the season ranked seventh overall in their weight classes.

Napa High’s Samantha Gardner (138) and Alex McChesney (146) begin the season ranked sixth and seventh, respectively.

Vintage was one of the first schools in the country to offer girls wrestling and continues to be considered one of the leading programs.

The Crushers will host the 10th annual ASICS Napa Valley Girls Classic, Jan. 11-12, 2008. The event was recently named the second most competitive girls tournament in the country, trailing only U.S. Girls Wrestling Association nationals.




Duran honored

Edison senior Samantha Duran was named most outstanding wrestler at the lower weight division at Saturday's Viking Kickoff.

Duran, who wrestles in the 112-pound division, is 4-0. She won three matches and was the only female wrestler competing in the tournament.

"She did a fantastic job," Edison coach George Leon said, "and she works hard in the wrestling room every day."
