Jess Kelvas has been a Kentucky and New York state wrestling champion all within the last month. Now, the Putnam Valley senior can be referred to as an all-american.
Kelvas finished fifth at 130 pounds Sunday at the 10th annual USGWA National Championships in Livonia, Mich.
"It's pretty cool," Kelvas said. "This is still blowing my mind that I actually did this and it happened so quickly."
Putnam Valley coach Will Carano pointed out that the competitors last weekend averaged four-five years' experience and were wrestling in at least their second national championships. This was Kelvas' first nationals.
"This speaks volumes of what Jess accomplished this weekend," Carano said. "To equate this it would be a boy first-year wrestler placing top-three in the state when the state championship was combined."
Kelvas opened the tournament with a victory, then was pinned by eventual three-time champion Tatiana Padilla (California) in the quarterfinals.
Kelvas returned Sunday and handled Calie Cutler (Michigan) 10-5, and Melissa Soderblom (Iowa) 4-3 to reach the consolation semifinals. Brienna Delgado (South Carolina) decisioned Kelvas 4-3 and was the only Kelvas opponent to record a takedown against her. Kelvas rebounded to decision Brittany Dell (Ohio), 8-2.
"I wasn't too worried about anything," Kelvas said about coming back Sunday. "That first win got me really excited because I was able to come out and dominate."

If they did, Vallejo High wrestler Angie Miller would be a national champion today.
But instead, Miller is the runner-up, foiled by an 8-4 quadruple overtime loss at 138 pounds to Veronica Carlson of Illinois in the title match of the United States Girls Wrestling Association National Championships near Detroit on Sunday.
After Miller and Carlson fought to a 4-4 tie at the end of three periods, the marathon match was on. First came a fruitless 1-minute overtime. Then came two more scoreless 30-second rounds. Finally, in the fourth extra period, each wrestler had a chance.
Miller tried to throw Carlson down and pick up two takedown points. But a slight falter opened the door for a Carlson escape and subsequent takedown of Miller, clinching the national championship with 10 seconds left.
"I didn't put her down on her face like I was supposed to," Miller said of the ill-fated takedown attempt. "I ended up letting her stand up, turn and get away."
It was a bitter ending for a near-perfect run for Miller. After pinning her first two opponents Saturday, Miller opened Sunday with a 3-2 semifinal win over top-seeded Brittany Woodall of West Virginia, who was ranked
second in the nation at 130 pounds. Miller was ranked fifth at 144 pounds.
After pulling off the win, Miller seemed destined for the national title. But the muscular Carlson stood in the way.
"The other girl posed a lot of problems for Angie," said Vallejo coach Mike Minahen. "Maybe she took Angie off her match a little bit."
The championship match went back and forth as neither wrestler established dominance. After Carlson took an early 1-0 lead with an escape, Miller grabbed a 2-1 edge with a takedown. Then an illegal headbutt from Miller tied the score. Another escape gave Carlson a 3-2 lead, but Miller tied it up late in the third period to send the match to overtime.
The finish might not have been what she was hoping for, but the tournament as a whole proved Miller to be a much improved wrestler from the start of the season.
"It's pretty tough," said Miller, a junior. "It hurts a lot. But I've been working hard all year and it really showed. I'll come back next year with a vengeance."

She did real well, Grizzlies coach Marty said. It was exciting.
The GHHS senior went 4-0 over the two-day tournament.
