ANTALYA, TURKEY Leigh Jaynes (Colorado Springs, Colo/Prince of Battle) won a bronze medal at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. at the Womens World Sombo Championships at the Antalya Sports Salon on Friday.
Jaynes was the lone U.S. entry in the competition. She came to Turkey to compete in the World Beach Wrestling Championships which will be held on Saturday. FILA, the international federation, invited Beach wrestlers to enter the Sombo event, and Jaynes took on the challenge.
Sombo is a style of jacket wrestling with submission holds originally developed in the former Soviet Union as a form of unarmed self-defense.
Her bronze medal performance, which included the only victory by submission in the tournament, led the United States to a third-place team finish in the competition behind champion Turkey and runner-up Spain.
Jaynes is a nationally ranked womens freestyle wrestler, and will be the only U.S. womens wrestling representative in Saturdays World Beach Championships.
I wanted to make the best of it, said Jaynes. I looked at this as a chance for another international experience. It is good competition. It is a whole different strategy. If you do Sombo, you get better on your center of gravity.
Jaynes went 1-2 in the competition. Her previous experience was an international match against an opponent from Brazil during the U.S. Sombo Nationals in Florida this year.
I improved every time, said Jaynes of her Sombo matches. I lost by technical fall in Florida, then here I lost by two, lost by one, then won by submission.
Her final match was a submission hold on an arm bar early in the match against Mine Yosmaoglu of Turkey.
I learned that lock in jiu jitsu, said Jaynes. I am a jiu jitsu instructor for the U.S. Army. I was glad to get the move.
Jaynes opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Seda Bozkhurt of Turkey, who scored on a throw. In her second match, she lost a controversial 1-0 decision to eventual champion Aurora Fasaro of Spain. Fasaros only point came on a passivity call, while Jayne executed a counter throw late in the match that was not awarded any points.
Jaynes was coached by David Bonner and Floyd Winter during the meet, and a number of the U.S. mens Sombo and Beach wrestlers came out to watch her wrestle.
The fact that she came out here and held her own against the best in the world shows she is a gifted wrestler and a natural wrestler, said Bonner. With a little more practice, she could win this tournament next year. She was up from her normal weight class, a little out of her element with the jacket, but she could have won this tournament. She never gives up. Even when she was down a point or two, she battled right to the buzzer. In the second match against the champion, she threw the other girl and should have received the winning points.
With Jaynes bronze medal, the United States has now won eight medals at the World Sombo Championships. The mens team placed second on Thursday and the womens team was third on Friday.

This year's McMaster University wrestling competition for men and women ( university wrestlers) utilized a new format. The men's competition was held on Saturday, November 4th and women's competition on Sunday, November 5, 2006. This spliting of competitions was a good move on the part of Nick Cipriano the head wrestling coach of McMaster. The benefits of this type of competition is that the both competitions were finished in early afternoon and the coaches were able to coach their athletes on 3 mats rather than running around and not making the corner to coach if a 6 mat system was used.
The women's wrestling was quite competitive and Cumberland University (USA) won the tournament and by far had the largest entry with over 20 competitors. Other universities from Canada and USA that took in this years competition were ; University of Western Ontario, Guelph University, Brock University, University of Toronto, Lakehead University, Montreal Wrestling Club (Concordia/McGill University), McMaster University, Queens University and Memorial University of Newfoundland. In addition to Cumberland University of USA, a team from Missourry Valley and Central Michigan participated.
On hand to see this years men's and women's University competition was Rodney Jarman - New Zealand's National senior men's & women's wrestling coach. Mr. Jarman is in Ontario for three weeks as part of co-operation by Commonwealth Amateur Wrestling Association, New Zealand Government and three Ontario ( London, Guelph, St. Catherines) wrestling centers. Coach Jarman will also look at a number of wrestling competitions at Ontario Highschools and he will participate at the University of Western Ontario coaching lecture in London.
The main purpose of coach Jarman's visit is to look at the wrestling programs and sytem used at Ontario Highschools, Universities and Clubs and can these wrestling programs be utilized in Highschools and Universities in New Zealand.
The clubs which are hosting the New Zealand wrestling coach are; London-Western Wrestling Club, Guelph Wrestling Club and Brock Wrestling Club.
The University of Western Ontario's - Jessica Fitzgerald won three matches without being scored upon to win the 67 kg weight class while teammate Kirby Steinhoff won the 72 kg individual gold to lead the mustangs to an overall 2nd place team finish, only one point behind University of the Cumberland who won with 29 points.
Missouri Valley placed a close third with 27 points, well ahead of 4th place Lakehead University.
Fitzgerald had a solid performance executing a strong defense using snap downs and 2nd line defensive sprawls to win her matches. The mustang captain and 4th year science student defeated Sheila McCabe of Cumberland University in two rounds, 4-0 and 5-0 in the final.
Steinhoff, a 2nd year political science student pinned three opponents and won the 72 kg weight class despite losing to Jocelyn Dresser of Brock University by decision who then lost to Amy Havens of Missouri Valley whom Steinhoff pinned.
UWO teammates, Stephanie Szmiett (48 kg) and Laura Skopelianos (51 kg) won individual silver medals. Jesss win was good to see, said UWO Head Coach - Ray Takahashi. Weve been working on our leg defense so it was nice to see her shut down her opponents. The women mustangs, OUA (Ontario University Association) silver medalists last season, will compete in the Toronto Open Nov 11 along with the men who placed third overall the day prior.
Although the season is early, its nice to have some good results which show well in the rankings, commented Takahashi. I thought we had some good performances, especially by Katrina Huszarik who place 6th in a highly competitive ( 17- entries) 59 kg weight class.
