India finishes fourth

Chandigarh: India finished fourth with three gold, six silver and seven bronze medals in the sixth Asian cadet wrestling championship in Bangkok.

According to information received here on Monday, Iran claimed the first position winning 10 gold, three silver and five bronze while Japan (6-4-2) and Korea (4-0-3) secured second and third positions respectively.

Medal winners for India:

Gold: Narender Kumar (50kg men's freestyle); Apoorva Tyagi (40kg women's freestyle); Kumari Babita (49kg women's freestyle).

Silver: Amit Dhankar (63kg men's freestyle); Sandeep Kumar (69kg men's freestyle); Parvesh (85kg men's freestyle); Mausam (100kg men's freestyle); Priyanka Singh (43kg women's freestyle); Wang Kaushalya (46kg women's freestyle).

Bronze: Surender (54kg men's freestyle); Imran Khan (76kg men's freestyle); Vishal Gorakhnath (85kg men's freestyle); Rakesh (100kg men's freestyle); Kavita (38kg women's freestyle); Jayawanti (65kg women's freestyle); Anmol (70kg women's freestyle). — UNI

Vietnamese wrestlers win two bronzes at Asian champs

VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnam won two bronzes in the women's freestyle wrestling, ranking 12th at the Asian Youth Championship that wrapped up in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 13.

Iran took the champion title with 10 gold, three silver and five bronze medals. The runners-up were Japan with six golds, four silvers and two bronzes and the Republic of Korea with four golds and three bronzes.

The four-day Asian Youth Wrestling Championship 2006 drew the participation of hundreds of wrestlers from 19 countries and territories. They competed in men's and women's freestyle and traditional events for 30 sets of medals.

Women bring home two Asian bronzes

HA NOI — Vietnamese female wrestlers brought home two bronze medals from the 5th annual Asian Youth Wrestling Championship, with Nguyen Thi Minh winning the 43kg title and Pham Thi Thanh Phuong taking the 46kg title.

Minh and Phuong both clinched the bronzes on the opening day of the Youth Asian Championship’s Greco-Roman and Women’s Freestyle events taking place last Friday in Bangkok, Thailand.

After overcoming Mongolian Chuluunbaatar Ganchimeg in three sets to reach the freestyle semi-final, Minh lost to Indian title favourite Singh Prinka 1-3. Minh took the 43kg bronze, her first medal at a regional event.

In the 46kg freestyle, Phuong had the luck of drawing a bye to the semi-final, where she met Indian Wagn Kaushalya, who had beaten her Thai rival 3-1 in the first round. Phuong, making her debut at an Asian competition, lost in three straight sets to her more experienced opponent to take the bronze.

In the final day of competition on Sunday, all four Vietnamese wrestlers failed to reach the finals.

Iranian wrestlers dominated the championship, grabbing 10 gold medals to finish in first.

Japan came in second, four golds behind, and South Korea took third, behind by seven golds.

Viet Nam finished 12th out of 19 teams at the competition which also included wrestlers from China, Kazakhstan, the Philippines and Chinese Taipei. — VNS
