Ukiah Daily Journal Staff 5/25/06
Three years in, the newly revamped BAM Wrestling Club of Ukiah is starting to make its presence known throughout the state of California.
May 12-14 at the Dave Schultz California Freestyle Championships in San Jose, BAM placed five wrestlers, including a state champion in the Bantam division, 8-year-old Beau Colombini, who wrestled at 65 pounds and went 5-0 at the state tournament.
Last year the BAM Wrestling Club placed two wrestlers at the state tournament. Now, in only its third year under a new regime led by head coach Brett Colombini, its on its way to becoming a force.
"California is a huge state for youth wrestling, so this was no walk in the park," said Brett Colombini. "I think that the kids are coming through the system we've implemented and they're starting to understand it. Each year we're only going to get better."
Beau Colombini was a repeat Bantam state placer from a year ago, when he took fifth. Beau Colombini is also the coach's son.
In Bantam Girls, Alyssa Roberts was a state runner-up, taking second place in the 50-pound weight class and going 2-1 at state. Kevin Mitchell took third place in the Schoolboy 70-pound division with a 2-1 record.
Midget division wrestler Donovan Partridge went 3-2 in San Jose, taking fourth place in the 87-pound class. Michael Kroppman was fourth place, wrestling in the Greco Roman Junior Fila division at 160 pounds.
In all, the BAM Wrestling Club took nine wrestlers to the state competition.
Also participating from Ukiah were Trevor Caico (Bantam), Ukiah High School standout John Escamilla (Cadet), Travis Mendoza (Cadet), and Tyler Hayes (Junior Fila)
The Wrestling Club season goes from October through May.

SANDPOINT -- Sandpoint wrestling standout Anneliese DeAragon recently won a girls national championship and qualified for a spot on a national team that will tour Beijing, China in August.
DeAragon and her little sister Lily, along with Jenny Hayes and Bri Watt of Bonners Ferry, took part in the Women's Body Bar National Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. last month.
Anneliese, an eighth grader at Sandpoint Middle School, won her title at 145 pounds in dominating fashion.
"She went in like a storm," said mom Pilar DeAragon. "She won all of her matches on pins."
Lily, 10, finished third in her bracket, one of the toughest at the tournament, and also took home a medal.
Watt, 14, and Hayes, 15, both wrestled at 114 pounds. Watt had a brutal draw, falling to the No. 2 seed in the first round, and then losing to the No. 1 seed in the next round, to a girl from Alaska who recently won a state title against boys at 103 pounds.
The highlight of the trip was the girls getting to work out with members of the women's U.S. Olympic team, who train in Colorado Springs.
"The girls were smiling from ear to ear with that," said Pilar. "These people are phenomenal, the girls learned a lot of new moves."
Annaliese is part of the 2006 Female Cadet National Team Tour that will participate in a series of competitions and training sessions with Chinese clubs. The group will get to visit the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, the Ming tombs and a host of other places during the 10-day trip beginning Aug. 3.
