At 105.5 pounds, top-seeded Clarissa Chun of the Gator WC advanced to the finals with a decision over Sara Fulp-Allen of Menlo College, 4-0, 1-0. Chun controlled the action and scored the only point in the second period.
In the other bracket, a competitive battle went to eight-time U.S. Nationals champion Stephanie Murata will have a chance for another title after beating Mary Kelly of the USOEC/New York AC, 4-3, 1-0.over Mary Kelly, Murata locked up a cradle in the first period to edge Kelly, 4-2 and scored the only takedown in the
At 112 pounds. 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Patricia Miranda of the Sunkist Kids made the national finals after taking a year off, by defeating Juliet Okot of the New York AC in two straight periods, 3-0, 7-0. In the second period, Miranda was able to turn Okot a number of times to score the technical fall in that period.
In the other bracket, 2003 World bronze medalist Jenny Wong of the Sunkist Kids needed to get a third-period leg clinch takedown to edge Jessica Medina of the Univ. of the Cumberlands, 0-1, 2-0, 1-0. Medina won the first period, but Wong came back for a razor-thin win over this improving college star.
At 121 pounds, Malinda Ripley of the Sunkist Kids, competing up at a new weight class, advanced to the finals with a bruising three-period win over Amy Borgnini of USOEC/New York AC, 1-1, 1-1, 5-0. Borgnini won the first period and Ripley the second. In the deciding period, a crotch-lift turn by Ripley was key in her dominating the period to get the win.
In the other bracket, Sharon Jacobson of the USOEC/Gator WC scored a second period win over Tina Pihl of Team Dream. Jacobson was in control of the match throughout, and earned her first trip to the U.S. Nationals finals.
At 130 pounds, two-time World bronze medalist Sally Roberts of the Gator WC stopped Othella Lucas of the New York AC by pin in the second period, 8-0, 1:14. Roberts scored a technical fall in a dominant opening period, and was able to turn Lucas to her back, and press for the fall in the second period.
The other bracket went to No. 2. ErinTomeo of the Sunkist Kids, who pinned young star Deanna Rix of the New York AC in the first period in 1:01. Tomeo recently dropped down to 130 pounds. A two-time runner-up, Tomeo seeks to win her first U.S. Nationals title.
At 138.75 pounds, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann of the Sunkist Kids was dominant in her semifinal match, scoring a second period fall over Rachel Billerbeck of Missouri Valley College, 6-0, 0:18. McMann used an ankle lace to get multiple turns for a first-period technical fall, then turned her quickly in the second period for the pin
In a upset in the other bracket, Jackie Cataline of Catalines Wildcats defeated No. 2 Alaina Berube of the New York AC, 2-0, 0-1, 4-1. In the deciding period, Cataline hit a three-point hiptoss to score the winning points late in the period.
At 147.5 pounds, 2005 World b ronze medalist Katie Downing of the Sunkist Kids dominated the match over Shelly Ruberg of the Univ. of the Cumberlands, 4-0, 7-0. Downing finished the match off with a technical fall in the second period.
In a battle of college students, Randi Miller of the USOEC/Gator WC scored all of the points in a 2-0, 3-0 win over former U.S. Nationals runner-up Heather Martin of the New York AC, who attends the Univ. of the Cumberlands. It will be Millers first trip to the U.S. Nationals finals.
At 158.5 pounds, two-time World champion Kristie Marano of the New York AC reached the finals with a dominant 2-0, 5-0 win over Donell Bradley of the USOEC. Marano was able to win the takedown positions, and turned Bradley for back exposure during the match.
Earning a spot in the finals, in a rugged three-period match, was Stephany Lee of Missouri Valley, who got past two-time Junior World champion Ali Bernard of the Gator WC, 1-0, 1-2, 4-3. In the deciding period, Lee jumped to a 4-0, and Bernard got three points on a throw in the final seconds which was too little too late.

GOLDEN GAL: Alyssa Caughy captured the gold in the juvenile women's 90-kg division to lead the Winnipeg Wrestling Club's five-wrestler contingent at the juvenile and cadet nationals wrestling championships, earlier this month in Edmonton. Wilson Le won silver in the 63 kg juvenile men's Greco division while Aislyn Torfason was fourth out of a field of 21 in the cadet women's 56 kg event.
Last month, Winnipeg club's Theresa Bakker took the silver in the women's 67 kg division at the junior nationals in Fredricton, N.B.

Anderson wrestler captures gold
Anderson senior LeAnn Barney won a gold medal at the U.S. Girls' Wrestling Association tournament recently in Lake Orion, Mich. Barney, competing at 118 pounds, defeated five opponents to win the championship.

Howorun adds to top athete honours

Stefanie Howorun was recently named as McMaster University's female athlete of the year.
It is the latest in a long string of honours for the Mayfield Secondary School graduate, a two-sport star in wrestling and judo.
Howorun, also was named the MVP of the school's women's wrestling team at the awards ceremony. She was one of three nominees for the school's top female athlete, along with Alicia Lummack a first team Ontario University Athletics (OUA) all star in water polo and Chiara Rocca, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women's basketball defensive player of the year.
Howorun, a third year student at McMaster, improved on her previous efforts in university competition.
She won a silver medal in her weight class at the CIS championship, losing only to the defending CIS champion and the wrestler ranked No. 1 in North America, Megan Baydens of Saskatchewan. Howorun also took her second career gold, and third medal at the OUA championships at 67 kilograms, improving on her 2005 silver medal.
Howorun earned gold at the Western Open along with bronze medals at the New York Athletic Club tournament and the Marauder Invitational.
In December she went to Niger to compete in the Francophone Games in judo, winning silver. Last summer she won bronze in wrestling at the FISU World University Games in Izmir Turkey.
And her athlete of the year award does not put an end to Howorun's season. She recenty attended the Ontario Senior wrestling championship, where she took the 67 kgs. crown.
In 2003 Howorun was awarded the Ken Giles Award as Brampton's Amateur Athlete of the Year.

U.S. Girls Wrestling Association National Championships Ariel Loza, an Aurora resident and student at the Herget Middle School, placed third in the 115-pound weight class at the national event held in Lake Orion, Mich., on April 1-2. Ariel is a member of the West Aurora Blackhawk Wrestling Club and competed for the Herget wrestling team.

In the women's portion of the championship round, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann won her fifth title in six years with a victory over Jackie Cataline in the 138.5 pound division.
Patricia Miranda, a bronze medalist in the 2004 Olympics, took the 112 division, her fourth title in five years.
Clarissa Chun outpointed Stephanie Murata in capturing the 105 1/2-pound title. Chun had lost in the title match her four previous attempts.

Wrestling: Reedsville's Ebert wins USGWA title
LAKE ORION, Mich. Reedsville native Amberlee Ebert upheld her No. 1 national ranking by winning the United States Girls Wrestling Association's ninth annual tournament on April 1-2.
Ebert was seeded No. 1 entering the only girls national folkstyle wrestling tournament, and that earned her a first-round bye before she scored 11 straight points to beat Texas' Lindsay Brooks, 11-2, in the second round.
In the third round, Ebert was down 9-4 after the second period against New York's Ashley Westman, and she maneuvered a reversal with less than a minute before getting a pin to advance.
On the second day of the tournament, Ebert pinned Ohio's Sara English in less than three minutes, and she dominated California's Teri Milkoff, 12-1, to win the gold medal.
All four wrestlers Ebert faced are all-Americans, and they finished in the top six at the tournament.
Ebert now heads to a freestyle competition, as she will be going to Colorado Springs in early May for the USA Body Bar nationals.
