The annual Western Open Wrestling Tournament ( men & women) took place in the Alumni Hall
Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Western Ontario, Saturday, February 4, 2006. This
years Tournament was one of the largest competitions in the history of this annual wrestling event.
The spectators got to see University wrestling at its best and in a comfortable facility, the Alumni
Hall. Among some 300 spectators were a few Western wrestling Alumni and it included the man
who started the annual event some 40 years ago, Dr. Glynn Leyshon (former UWO wrestling coach).
"I am glad to see wrestling back at the Alumni Hall as it showcases the sport and I am happy to
see that the Rogers TV is covering the wrestling finals . I hope to see some University wrestling
duals here next year as it is a great venue for wrestling " stated Dr. Leyshon.
The Western Open women's competition was one of the toughest and had the largest entry ( 95
competitors) to date. The two top women's college teams from USA, Cumberland University and
Missouri College entered large teams. The University teams from OUA league were, Lakehead
University, Toronto University, McMaster University, Queens University, Guelph University, Brock
University and University of Western Ontario. In addition, teams from Concordia University and
McGill University from Montreal took part and a team from University of New Brunswick.
A number of Club teams entered this years Western Open as well. The Club teams were Montreal
Wrestling Club, Guelph Wrestling Club, Brock Wrestling Club, Windsor Wrestling Club, Team Impact
and London-Western Wrestling Club. The athletes competing for the clubs are not University students.
In women's competition from the Club entries, the outstanding athlete of the competition by far was
Martine Dugrenier (72kg) of Montreal Wrestling Club. In men's competition the outsdanding wrestler
was Cleo McNube (72kg) of Brock Wrestling Club. A number of Highschool age wrestlers also
competed and showed that they can be competitive at this level of wrestling. One such wrestler was
Correy Lee (76 kg) of Windsor Wrestling Club winning a bronze medal.
The mustang womens varsity wrestling team won the overall title at the Western Open Wrestling
Tournament. Western actually tied Missouri Valley with 28 points but won on the tie-breaker with more
top 6 place finishers. Cumberland University of Kentucky placed 3rd with 26 points. Coach Kip Flanick
of Cumberland was pleased with the tournament set up , the facilities and the performance of his women's
squad. In spite of some referees calls which coach Flanick objected to, said " we will be back next
year in London and our goal is to win the Western Open women's team tittle ".
London's Saunders Highschool graduate, Jill McCallum , won gold in the 63 kg for Western's varsity
team, defeating Tasha Eady of Lakehead University, a 2005 Junior world bronze medalist. It was a
good tournament for Jill, said assistant UWO coach, Harry Geris ( Jill's Highschool coach) .
Jill avenged her OUA loss to Tasha from last year and she is on track to win the 2006 OUA's . added
Josip Mrkoci another UWO assistant coach. Jill was the most outstanding woman wrestler at this years
Western Open among the University athletes. In men's University division outstanding wrestler was
Jonathan Rioux ( 90kg) of Concordia University. Concordia won the men's team tittle.
Other women mustangs winning medals, were co-captains, Terri McNutt (51 kg) who took silver medal
and Jess Fitzgerald who won bronze at 67 kg. McNutt still remains undefeated against OUA competition
as her loss came against former Western star, Belinda Chou who is ineligible for University and now
competes for the Guelph Wrestling Club. McNutt defeated Chou at Guelph Open by a pin on a head
and arm throw couple of weeks ago but this time Chou used the tactics of scoring single points on leg a
ttacks and staying away from tie-ups where Mcnutt is superior.
Jess (Fitzgerald) had a good tournament, said head coach, Ray Takahashi. Her bronze medal match
against Tabitha Golt of Cumberland University was a good win. Golt thought Jess was going to the right,
but caught Golt with a left-sided head-and-arm throw and secured the pin.
Other solid mustang performances were recorded by Kate Wilson (48 kg), Katrina Huszarik (59 kg) and
Lauren MacDonald (82 kg). The mustang women are on a roll having placed 2nd in the Queens Open (
Kingston) the previous week and taking the Ontario Provincial junior title in Ottawa, January 28, 2006.
The women mustangs varsity team are ranked 9th in the North American Women's College Poll (Date
Ranked: 01/31/2006 Ranked by North American coaches). Mustang, Terri McNutt holds a 2nd place
ranking in North America at 51 kg behind Mary Kelly (Northern Michigan USOEC).
Both men and women mustang wrestlers will prepare for the OUA Championships, February 18 in T
hunder Bay where the mustangs will field their top wrestler in each of the 10 mens and 8 womens
weight classes.
The semifinals and finals of the 2006 Western Open ( men & women) was covered by Rogers TV
of London and will be shown on local cable in Southwestern Ontario region on Sunday, February 12 th,
2006 at 6:30 P.M.

Lower Lake's Torrey sixth at state finals
By staff reports 2/7/06
HANFORD -- With a year remaining in her high school wrestling career, Lower Lake High School junior Monica Torrey served notice on Saturday that she's just getting warmed up for the 2006-07 season.
Torrey capped a solid 2005-06 campaign with a sixth-place finish in the 108-pound division at the unofficial CIF State Finals for girls' wrestling at Hanford, a two-day event similar to the annual boys' wrestling finals held at Bakersfield.
While this year's girls' tournament wasn't officially sanctioned by CIF, the Northern California qualifier held earlier this month at Rocklin did indeed carry the CIF stamp of approval.
And plans are in the works now for the CIF to officially recognize a state girls' championship next season, according to Lower Lake coach Justin Gaddy, who attended the tournament along with Torrey and teammate Brittany Foree, a sophomore, and said he was impressed.
"There were girls there who looked like they go to any boys' tourney and do well," Gaddy said. "Many of them have been involved in freestyle wrestling for years. They're strong and have great technique."
Both Torrey and Foree reached the second day of the double-elimination competition. Torrey ended up 4-3 overall with three pins. One of her victories -- that coming on day two -- was a double-overtime victory over Hallie Boltz of South Fork.
Torrey elected to take the "top" position at the start of the double-overtime and stayed in control the entire second overtime to win the match.
"A wrestler will usually take the down' position because if you can get an escape, you win the match," Gaddy said. "She (Torrey) took the top and did a great job of riding her the entire way. If you do that the entire (double-overtime) period, you win the match."
Gaddy said Torrey saved her best wrestling for day two.
"She did so-so the first day but did great on the second day," Gaddy said. "I think she was able to refocus and she wrestled real well."
Foree also reached the second day of the tournament, winning a match in the consolation bracket of the 138-pound division before absorbing her second loss.
"That was impressive," Gaddy said.
While Lower Lake's girls were busy Saturday in Hanford, members of the junior varsity team competed in Ukiah. Tyler Johnson (112 pounds), Jay Michael Stevens (112), Scott Johns (140) and Cody Baker (160) all went 4-1.

Female wrestler wins state title in Alaska
KansasCityStar.com 2/7/06
Think its a big deal to lose to a girl?
Not if you weigh 103 pounds and wrestle in Alaska.
Michaela Hutchison made history Saturday night in Anchorage when she won the big-class division at 103 pounds at the state wrestling tournament. Her 1-0 win over Aaron Boss in the championship match allowed her to become the first girl wrestler in the country to win a state title against boys.
Hutchison, a sophomore who entered the state tournament ranked No. 1 in her weight class, completed her historic run by scoring an escape with 16 seconds left in the match to beat Boss for the second time in two weeks. She finished the season with a 45-4 record, 33 wins coming on pins.
Hutchison was a crowd favorite throughout the tournament. In the finals, there were chants of Cmon, Michaela and Girl Power as video cameras rolled and flashbulbs popped. As she walked off the mat, she was mobbed by family and friends during a standing ovation.
I dont care about (the significance) right now, she said as she was trying to get her nose to stop bleeding. I was excited to get done with the season. Im been waiting for this for a while.
Hutchison was born to wrestle. Shes one of 10 children and the third in her family to win a state title, joining brothers Zeb and Eli. Her sister Melina placed third at state six years ago.
They love the sport more than any other family I know, coach Neldon Gardner said. This is a result of that dedication.
