The London-Western Wrestling Club women wrestlers won the Junior Provincial Wrestling team title
defeating perennial powerhouse Brock Wrestling Club by 1 point. It was the first time the women
wrestlers from London captured the Ontario Junior (under 20 year old) wrestling championships.
The 2006 Ontario Junior Wrestling Championships were held at the Bell Highschool, Nepean, which
is on the outskirts of Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. Bell Highschool is the school that Ray
Takahashi, ( 3 time Olympian) attended and was honored by presenting the medals to this years
medal winners as well as team trophies. It was an honor for coach Takahashi, the head coach of
London-Western Wrestling Club and the University of Western Ontario Varsity Wrestling Team that
his women wrestlers won the team title at his old Highschool.
Jennifer Nguyen (55 kg) and Lindsay Rebernik (63 kg) both first year students at the University of
Western Ontario won gold leading the women to Provincial team tittle with 26 overall points. Brock
Wrestling Club placed second with 25 points and in third place was Guelph Wrestling Club with
21 points. All of the women medal winners representing London-Western W.C. are students at the
University of Western Ontario and are also members of UWO Women's Varsity Wrestling Team.
Jenn Nguyen was instrumental in London-Western Wrestling Club team tittle when she shut out her
Brock Wrestling Club opponent, Kelly McMiven in two straight rounds in the final of 55 kg weight class.
Lindsay Rebernik who missed making weight at 59kg. by 0.3 kg was moved up to 63kg and wrestled
well to win. In the finals Rebernik pinned Jackie Davidson (Guelph) at 1:45 of the first round to secure
the gold medal.
Erica Thomson (51 kg) and Adrienne South (59 kg) won silver medals while teammates, Kirby
Steinhoff (72kg) and Lauren MacDonald (78 kg) won bronze medals . "We had a well-balanced team
going in the tournament," commented coach and board member (London-Western W.C.), Josip Mrkoci.
Coach Ray Takahashi stated "Lindsay Rebernik performed very well for us at 63 kg. as she rebounded
from not making weight at 59 kg. weight class. The star performer for the team at this year's Ontario
Junior Provincial Championships was Jenn Nguyen".
The mens team did not do as well as expected, they placed 5th overall with 11 points. Jeff Werden
2nd year UWO kinesiology student wrestling for London-Western W.C. won a silver medal at 55 kg.
Among the medal winners, a select group will be chosen by London-Western Wrestling Club to compete
at the 2006 Canadian Junior National Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Mar 17-19.
