University of Western Ontario captains, Terri McNutt and Jess Fitzgerald won all their matches at the 2005 Brock University Invitational Wrestling competition in St. Catherines, Ontario this past weekend. Mcnutt and Fitzgerald lead the mustangs to a second place finish behind host team Brock University.
McNutt in her final year of eligibility with the mustangs beat Brock’s Liz Martindale by pin in the 2nd round, after dropping the first round 1-4. "Terri got countered from her leg attacks early in the first round and Martindale had a good defense to hold on for the first round win," said coach, Ray Takahashi. "But I knew she would come back – she’s has a great ability to come from behind." The nursing graduate student threw Martindale in a head-and-arm throw in the 2nd round and followed it up with a pin in the 55 kg weight class.
Co-captain, Jess Fitzgerald (67 kg) also beat her Brock opponent, Buffy Ainsworth by pin. "Jess is really working hard this year and she just wore Ainsworth down" stated coach Takahashi.
First year student, Kirby Steinhoff also won by pin from a throw against Brock’s Jocelyn Dresser at 72 kg.
The mustangs defeated University of Toronto, McMaster University and Guelph University to match up with defending OUA champions Brock University. In the head-to-head dual of six matches, each took 3 wins, but Western’s Katrina Huzsarik (59 kg) had to forfeit due to injury and the mustangs voided the 51 kg class.
Other mustangs were Katie Wilson (48 kg), Sarah Gil (63 kg), and LaToya Blackwood (82 kg).
University of Guelph took the bronze, followed by University of Toronto and McMaster University.
