Cejudo, Wong, Lester named Outstanding Wrestlers at New York AC Holiday Championships
11/20/2005
Gary Abbott/USA Wrestling
Three talented wrestlers were named Outstanding Wrestlers after spectacular performances at the New York Athletic Club Holiday Championships on Sunday, November 20 at the New York Athletic Club in New York City.
Named as Outstanding Wrestlers were Henry Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in mens freestyle, Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in womens freestyle and Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio/Gator WC/USOEC) in mens Greco-Roman.
Cejudo, a high school senior who has quickly become a force on the Senior level, scored a 1-2, 4-1, 10-2 win over Ekhkhtur Badamsakian (Advanced Training) in the gold-medal finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Cejudo hit a five-point throw in the deciding third period to finish the match for the win.
In the semifinals, Cejudo defeated 2005 Junior World champion Besik Kudukhov of Russia, 3-1, 7-0.
This tournament is just the beginning of my World and Olympic titles, said Cejudo. This is just a sample. That is why I do this instead of high school. There is more competition in freestyle. The guy that won the Junior Worlds, I beat in the semis. I feel like a World champion. I got it back.
In a tight battle at 112.25 pounds, Wong, a 2003 World bronze medalist, defeated 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Patricia Miranda (New Haven, Conn./Sunkist Kids). Miranda, who has moved up in weight from 105.5 lbs., was competing in her first event since the 2004 Olympic Games. Wong was a member of the 2005 U.S. World Team at this division.
I am really happy it went like this. I have been working on my offense. To win with a takedown is a big deal, Patricia is a tough competitor, and this was a satisfying win for me, said Wong.
Lester, who was a member of the 2005 U.S. World Team, stopped Mark Rial (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator), 6-0, 7-0.
This is definetly a confidence builder. I wrestled really well. I felt I got off my moves. I wrestled well on my feet. On the mat, I did well with par terre defense. I felt strong on my feet. I felt better than I usually do, said Lester.
All four U.S. Greco-Roman World Team members who entered the competition won their weight classes.
Along with Lester, the other 2005 World Team members winning titles were Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., and 2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. All three of these wrestlers were also champions at the NYAC Holiday Open last year as well.
Durlacher beat Joseph Betterman (Chicago, Ill./NYAC), 3-1, 1-1 in the finals. It was a rematch of the Sunkist Kids Open finals, won by Betterman.
Warren beat Willie Madison (Metarie, La./Gator/USOEC), 5-0, 3-0 in the finals. Warren was ninth in the World Championships in Hungary this year.
Byers stopped Russ Davie (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), 1-1, 6-0, 2-0. These are the top two ranked wrestlers in this weight class in the nation.
The womens division featured a number of highly competitive matches between talented stars.
At 67 kg/147.5 lbs., 2003 World bronze medalist Katie Downing (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) defeated two-time World champion Kristie Marano (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs., 2-0, 1-0. It was a rematch of the finals of the 2005 World Team Trials, won by Downing.
2005 U.S. World Team members Stephanie Murata (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) stopped 2004 Olympic Trials runner-up Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs/Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., 5-0, 2-0. Murata, a past World silver medalist, has competed as low as 48 kg, often wrestling at 51 kg or 55 kg in the past. Chun defeated 2005 World bronze medalist Carol Huhyn of Canada in the semifinals to earn her spot in the finals against Murata.
In the mens freestyle division, only one returning champion was able to defend his title.
Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist) defeated Pat Cummins (State College, Pa./NYAC), 1-1, 6-4 in the finals at 120 kg/264.5 pounds. Rowlands was the champion at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. last year.
Other mens freestyle champions were:
Travis Lee (Ithaca, N.Y./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs.
Jared Larwrence (Minneapolis, Minn./Minn. Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
Kakhabez Khubezhty of Russia at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Andy Hrovat (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.
Nick Preston (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
Other womens champions were:
Marcie Van Dusen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs.
Breanne Graham of Calgary, Canada (UCWC) at 59 kg/130 lbs.
Megan Dolan of Calgary Canada/UCWC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Tabitha Golt (Chesapeake, Va./Cumberland) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.
Other Greco-Roman champions were:
Sasa Petkovic (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Noumouvi Melonin of Rosny at 84 kg/185 lbs.
Adam Wheeler (Lancaster, Calif./Gator WC/USOEC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Mat Chat 11 March 2002 on 783AM: The Genuine Voice of Wellington (New
Zealand)
This week on Mat Chat I will be catching up with Kelly Dearborn, Technical
Director for Wrestling Canada Lutte.
With the 2001 successes of Gia Sissaouri and Christine Nordhagen-Vierling,
and a busy 2002 schedule ahead with the Pan American Championship (just a week away
now), the British Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the World Championships,
Wrestling Canada has a lot on its plate at this time.
On top of that there seems to be a much closer co-operation in the area of
development of women's programs between Canada and the United States emerging in 2002.
I'll be discussing these and other relevant matters with Kelly this week on Mat
Chat.
DON'T MISS THE ACTION!!!
To catch the latest in news from the world of wrestling and the combat
sports, tune into:
783AM Access Radio: The Genuine Voice of Wellington
this and every Monday from 5:30pm through till 6:00pm!
And for those of you who can't receive our broadcast, each week you can
still follow the main point of our previous Monday's discussion in the 'Highlight's of Last
Week's Show' section of our weekly email.
The Mat Chat Radio Show is an independently produced and financed program
dedicated to the promotion of wrestling and the other combat sports. It is not
controlled by any of the various official governing bodies of the combat sports in New Zealand
and the information, opinion etc presented on the show does not necessarily reflect
the official policy of any such governing body in this country.
Guest Appearances:
Over the next few weeks we have some special guests appearing on the show.
18 Mar: Gary Abbott will return to finish off the topics we didn't get time
to cover on 28 January, and also to give us a full run-down of this years NCAA
competition. 25 Mar: Mike Chapman from the Wrestling Museum joins us for a week of
wrestling heritage. Mike has written a number of books relating to the
grappling game, and this will be a great opportunity to look at the
heritage of our sport.
If you would like to submit a question to be put to a particular guest,
send it in to me at one of the following addresses. I will include the question and the answer
(or at least a summary of the answer) in the Listener's Mail section of the following
week's promo.
Highlights of Last Week's Show:
After hearing from John Lawton in 'The Sunshine State' the previous week,
it was a very different climate that restricted our interview with USGWA
President Kent Bailo on his way back from New York to Michigan via a
Canadian blizzard!
We were able to catch up on a lot of news from the USGWA before the
atmospheric conditions cut the conversation short however.
Kent was in fact travelling back from a double header: the NCAA Division
III finals where he officiated and the New York USGWA State Tournament.
Over the course of the weekend USGWA held State Tournaments in South
Carolina, Indiana, Texas and Missouri (all on Saturday) and New York,
Kansas, Iowa and Wisconsin all on the Sunday.
The NCAA Division III (National) competition was dominated by Augsburg
College from Minneapolis, Minnesota once again. Augsburg has won the event
7 out of the last 10 years now. This year their win was by a slightly
smaller margin due to the fact that two of their wrestlers who were
defending National Champions were beaten in the early rounds this year and
didn't even place.
About 60 schools had wrestlers who had made their way through the various
regional and State qualifying Championships for this event. Teams from
Iowa were once again strong. Upper Iowa had a Cuban wrestler on its team -
Jesus Wilson who had competed at international level in the past and one of
the New Jersey teams had a Belarusian on their team. So even though the
folkstyle style is seen as an 'American' style, wrestlers from other
nations are certainly proving successful at it.
Kent highlighted one of the bouts at the competition where one wrestler was
0-14 down to the number 2 seed in his group after the first three minutes
(in folkstyle remember it is a 15-point margin that ends the match as
opposed to 10 in freestyle) and chose the neutral position on his feet for
the restart. He threw a headlock on his opponent and took him down to gain
a pin fall win.
That's wrestling! The match is 'never truly over till its over'.
While Iowa certainly remains a dominant force on the American scene,
Minnesota is seen as the 'one to watch' (or 'the hammer' to use Kent's
expression). Last year for the first time ever they had 10 All-Americans
(in other words, wrestlers who placed in the top 8 at the National finals)
and only 2 of those 10 graduated last season, so the school has kept the
bulk of its stars this season.
Kent rates Minnesota as the best team in the country with University of
Michigan (his own home State) second and Iowa third with Oklahoma, Oklahoma
State and Ohio chasing those hard. Kent refereed at the Minnesota V
Michigan dual meet earlier in the season at which Minnesota came out on
top. But Michigan is looking to be at peak for the Conference finals
coming up over the next few weeks.
Kent's own USGWA is progressing nicely. Last year the USGWA hosted 14
State Tournaments in addition to its Nationals and this year the
organization will host 24, and Kent is hopeful of 35-36 next year.
The 8 tournaments held over this weekend just gone were mostly attended by
just under 100 wrestlers. Kent expects around 500 women and young girls to
contest his National Championships in Lake Orion later this month. The
Nationals have been attended by wrestlers from 44 of the States of USA in
the past. This year he hopes to see the first contestants from South
Dakota, South Carolina and Rhode Island at the Nationals.
The only two States in the USA that don't have high school wrestling are
Mississippi and Arkansas. Arkansas is especially hard to understand due to
its proximity with the
long-time wrestling hotbed of Oklahoma.
This year USGWA has initiated a 'Championships Belt' system that sees the
wrestlers who place in the various USGWA Tournaments across the country
earn points according to their placing. At the end of the year, the
wrestlers with the most points in each division will be awarded a
'Championship Belt'.
The 'Championship Belt' leaders so far are:
Elementary School Division: Catherine Williams (Gilbertville, Iowa)
Middle School Division: Nicole Woody (St Leonard, Maryland)
High School Division: Elizabeth Sanders (Newton, Iowa)
Catherine Williams has won every tournament she has been to. And she goes
to two tournaments every weekend. Last weekend she was in Indiana on
Saturday and back in Iowa on Sunday.
Nicole Woody only went to South Carolina last weekend. She is something of
a 'new face', with this being her first 'big impact' year.
Elizabeth Sanders also attended 2 tournaments last weekend, Missouri on
Saturday and Iowa on Sunday. She also has won every tournament she has
attended this season.
Others to watch at the upcoming National Championships later in the month
are (all from Michigan) Brandy Rosenbrook (134lbs), Gina Heiselman (100lbs)
and Elena Burby (130lbs).
Watch out too for Joey Miller from Woodward, Oklahoma in the younger age
groups. She has her own web site called Joey's Wrestling Room at
www.wrestlegirl.com which Kent rates as one of the best wrestling sites on
the internet. It contains comprehensive results, articles and links
relating to the whole sport of wrestling in the United States.
When you consider that she is only in the 6th Grade at school (around 11
years old) this really is a remarkable site and a sign of a hugely talented
youngster.
Cheyenne Stokes from Tulsa, Oklahoma in the Middle School competition is
also one to watch.
We began discussing the upcoming North Carolina, Florida and California
tournaments when the weather conditions broke up the reception, so we
weren't able to get a lot of information about those, however if you check
out the USGWA homepage I'm sure you can find all the relevant details.
If you are interested in reading more about Kent's USGWA program, check out
www.usgwa.com
With the extra time available to us on the show we covered the latest news
and rankings in
from Pancrase, Japan. You can check out the latest from Pancrase at
www.so-net.ne.jp/pancrase/en/
Listener's Mail:
Do you have anything you want to add on the subjects discussed on our shows
each week? Or do you have a question for an upcoming guest.
In a follow up item to our interview with Michael J.Carnes from Nebraska
Wrestling Illustrated a couple of weeks ago. Michael is also heavily
involved in State basketball and took his local school girl's basketball
team to Wisconsin for the NCAA Division II National Championships.
The Gretna Lady Dragons made it through to the semi-finals where they went
down to South Sioux City, who went on to win the competition for the third
consecutive year, and the 7th time in the last 8 years. It sounds as
though that was another great tournament, and congratulations are due to
all involved.
Special Announcements:
