HIGH SCHOOLS // Girls wrestling on CIF council agenda

DAN ALBANO. Orange County Register. Santa Ana, Calif.: Oct 13, 2005.

The CIF-Southern Section Council is expected to vote today on whether
to support a state proposal seeking to create a pair of regional girls
wrestling invitationals in January.

The vote will be at the council's first meeting of the school year at
The Grand in Long Beach at 9 a.m.

The proposal calls for Southern and Northern California regionals to be
held on the same weekend in January. The two-day tournaments would follow a
double-elimination format and feature 14 weight classes.

Girls participating in the tournaments still would be able to compete
in the boys season.

South Hills of West Covina has been discussed as a potential site for
the Southern California tournament, state spokeswomen Emmy Zack said.

The proposal is expected to be voted on at the state federated council
meeting Oct. 28.

Another topic at the meeting will be the appeal by JSerra of its league
placement in Orange County.

In March, Orange County principals placed the San Juan Capistrano
school in an all-parochial league with Mater Dei, Santa Margarita,
Servite/Rosary, Orange Lutheran and St. John Bosco of Bellflower for the 2006-2010
league cycle.

The three-year school wants to be in the league for all sports except
football. For football, it wants to play in the new league with Costa
Mesa, Estancia, Calvary Chapel, Godinez and Laguna Beach, JSerra principal
Tom Waszak said.

The council also will hear a Southern Section proposal calling for
sports that play for state championships (basketball, for example) to group
their section playoff divisions based on competitive equity.

Because divisions for state playoffs are grouped by school enrollment,
the section also currently forms its playoff divisions by enrollment.

The council also could vote on a section proposal seeking to increase
the minimum number of victories a basketball team needs to petition for an
at-large playoff berth from 11 to 12.

The section's executive committee has a proposal that would allow the
section to negotiate terms of television contracts on the behalf of
schools during the regular season, section spokesman Thom Simmons said.

The section would use the revenue to offset costs on expenses such as
coaching education. After the meeting, the section will play hosto to
its "Champions for Character" luncheon.
