India wins the 2005 South African Centenary Wrestling Cup,South Africa places second.

Cape Town, South Africa - The South African Centenary Wrestling Championships concluded last night July 9, 2005 at the gymnasium hall at the University of Stellenbosch. India dominated the Freestyle men's and women's wrestling as well as the Greco-Roman style. South African wrestlers came close on their heels but it was not enough. Majority of the Commonwealth wrestling nations stayed for the wrestling camp/symposium July 3-7 and then competed at the Centenary Cup July 8-9.

In addition to the Commonwealth teams there were entries from Germany and Uganda.

In the preliminary rounds India, South Africa and Germany dominated the S.A. Centenary Cup wrestling matches. The lone Canadian medal won in Freestyle was by Tony Ronci of Montreal, he won a bronze medal at 66 kg.

Michael Volkel 96 kg of Germany won the Frestyle gold as well as Greco-Roman gold medal. The South African Wrestling Federation selected as MICHAEL VOLKEL the best wrestler for Greco-Roman style of wrestling as he defeated the Commonwealth Champion from India in his weight class. In Freestyle for men RAMESH KUMAR of India won best wrestler award and SONJA COETZEE of South Africa won in women's.


India won the team trophies for the Freestyle men and women and Greco-Roman men. The same feat was accomplished by India a week earlier at the Commonwealth Championships. South Africa placed second . India won 5 gold medals in men's Freestyle and in women's 6 gold and 6 gold in Greco-Roman.

" Without a doubt India brought the best wrestlers to South Africa to wrestle and they won the most medals and are team champions for the Commonwwalth Championships and our Centenary Wrestling Cup. We are proud of our South African wrestling team as they placed second to India and won a number of medals. In Centenary Cup in frestyle for men COENRAAD DE VILLIERS at 84 kg. won a gold and in women's SONJA COETZEE at 67 kg won a gold as well. This is the best results achieved by our wrestlers at International competition to date" stated Dave van der Merwe, President, South African Wrestling Federation.

" The Commonwealth Championships and the South African Centenary Cup were well organized and well run and the South African Wrestling Federation and its Executive should be congratulated for hosting these two wrestling events .The local Organizing Committee and it's Chairman Mr. Sakki Bosse did an excellent job and the Town of Stellenbosch and it's people made the wrestlers feel welcome " said Josip Mrkoci, Chairman of the Commonwealth Amateur Wrestling Association.

Jr Women Win 4 Medals

 

USA Women won 4 total medals (while placing 5 wrestlers) at the World Junior Championships held at Vilnius, Lithuania July
8-10, 2005. This was the highest medal count for USA Junior Women ever.

Ali Bernard won the Gold at 72k,

Sara Fulp-Allen 48k,
Dany Hedin 55k,
Heather Martin 67k all won Silver medals while
Suekoilya Shelly placed 5th .

By winning 4 medals, the USA women wrestlers tied
Ukraine in the total medal count lead by champion Japan. Japan won 5 total
medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze); Ukraine won 4 medals (2 gold, 2
silver); and USA won 4 medals (1 gold, 3 silver).

The overall team race places points up to 10th place
descending in order i.e. 10 points for gold, 9 points for silver, 8
points for bronze, 7 points for 4th, etc. Thus, the USA placed
5th overall placing 5 wrestlers in the top 10. Japan won the team
race placing all of its wrestlers in the top 10 (USA places five
wrestlers in top 10).
