2005 USGWA National Championships
Numbers Continue to Rise

The total numbers of entries in the 2005 USGWA National Championships was 622. Every division con
tinues to grow except the collegiate folkstyle. High School Division had an increase of 38 wrestlers; from 283 in 2004 to 321 in 2005. The Middle School Division jumped up 32 wrestlers this year; from 105 in 2004 to 137 in 2005. And the new middle school weight classes had pretty even distribution of wrestlers. Elementary school division increased by 25 entries, from 97 in 2004 to 122 in 2005. All elementary wrestlers got five matches at Nationals. This tournament continues to be THE WORLD'S LARGEST GIRLS WRESTLING TOURNAMENT. The collegiate folkstyle event drew 42 entries, down from 48 last year (last year the collegiate freestyle event had 68 wrestlers). Not bad considering the College Coaches Women's Wrestling
Champinships in 2005 had only 32 entries.

MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLERS

Deanna Rix won her third consecutive USGWA National Championship, to go along with her third place finish in her freshman year, she's a 4-time All-American in USGWA competition. Rix was Most Outstanding Wrestler in the heavier weights, winning the 134lbs. weight class with a 7-2 decision over Leilani Akiyama of Bellevue, Washington. Akiyama was the defending champ at 118 lbs. Joey Miller was MOW in the lighter weights, taking the 105 lbs. title over Whitney Conder of Puyallup, Washington by a 9-3 score. In the middle school age division the MOW's were Sarah Dorsay of New Jersey, winning her second crown in the middle school division, and the second year with all pins. MOW in the heavy weights was illinois strong girl Veronica Carlson, also all pins. In the elementary division the MOW awards went to Missouri's Montana Drum and Reni Gallan of Arizona.

TIME FOR STATES TO START CONSIDERING STARTING ALL GIRLS PROGRAMS LIKE HAWAII AND TEXAS

Seventeen, that's right, 17, "girls qualified for boys high school state tournaments around the country in 2005. Six of those girls placed. Most prominent was Deanna Rix, 2nd in Maine at 130 lbs. She finished the season at 24-2. Her two losses came to the state champion in overtime, and she had two wins over him earlier, once by pin and the other in overtime. Deanna wrestled three overtime matches with the guy who eventually beat her for the state title.
Joey Miller took 4th in Oklahoma at 103 lbs. Whitney Conder took 6th in Washington at 103 lbs., Michela Hutchinson took 2nd in Alaska at 103 lbs. And another girl placed in Washington and one in Maine at 1031bs. Several more qualified for state: Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota. They are everywhere. The best solution is to give girls state tournaments that are equal to the boys and watch the numbers grow. Texas has over 160 girls varsity wrestling teams. They have only 180 boys teams, but wrestling is growing faster for boys and girls quicker in Texas than any other state. Wait until those FOOTBALL coaches see that wrestling helps develop better FOOTBALL PLAYERS and even more will jump on the bandwagon. Hawaii has an equal number of boys and girls teams. Washington had exhibitions at their boys state finals in 2004, and doubled in size for 2005. Washington is the closest now to sanctioning a girls championships and season. The Michigan High School Athletic Association's Wrestling Committee recommended to the Executive Council that an ad hoc committee be formed to make recommentations as to how to proceed with girls wrestling.

DATE FOR 2006 USGWA NATIONALS

The 2006 USGWA National Championships will be Saturday and Sunday, March 25-26, 2006 at Lake Orion High School in Lake Orion, Michigan. It goes back to its usual date, the 4th weekend in March. This year the tournament was moved up because Easter was the 4th.. weekend in March. What to do in 2007? With the NCAA Men's Division I Wrestling Championships coming to the Palace of Auburn Hills on March 15-16-17, 2007 just six miles from Lake Orion High School

THE OPPOSING POINT OF VIEW ON WOMEN'S COLLEGE WRESTLING

In 1995 Doug Reese started a women's collegiate freestyle wrestling program at the University of Minnesota-Morris. Morris was the only collegiate women's wrestling team until 1999 when Missouri Valley College and Cumberland College started. Then Menlo College added, Pacific University in Oregon added, Neosho Community College added, then a couple of years later dropped their women's program. Morris dropped their women's program before the beginning of last season. Lassen Junior College in California has a womens team. Bacone College in
Oklahoma says they have a womens team, just not many wrestlers at this point. Several colleges have clubs including University of Hawaii, MacMurray College, Cal State-Bakersfield, Princeton, and Harvard, West Texas A&M, American International in Massachusetts and a few others have had clubs over the years. The big question, "WHY HASN'T WOMEN'S COLLEGIATE WRESTLING TAKEN OFF?"
The answer, according to yours truly, Kent Bailo, is because women in college should be wrestling FOLKSTYLE. The women's college coaches say we need to wrestle freestyle to get ready for the World Championships and the Olympics, and the Canadians. I say, "1 never hear men's college coaches say those things." If the men have 10 weight classes in college wrestling, so should the women. If the men wrestle folkstyle in high school and college, so should the women.
Why do we tell our girls, basically, "Change your style after high school or your wrestling career is over." We don't do that to our boys. Why this big emphasis on THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE OLYMPICS, our college mens teams are worried about winning the NCAAs. Presently women and girls have no intermediate goal. Any little girl who wins a few matches against boys is "going to the Olympics" just ask her parents or the local newspapers! Parents of little boys never make those claims, they know they had better win a few high school state championships first, and a couple of NCAA Division I Championships wouldn't be a bad credential before we start talking "Olympics."
What girls and women need to get better is not more freestyle training. Women need more numbers. And numbers will get bigger quicker is things are EASY for college athletic directors who don't know a wrestling singlet from a synchronized
swimming suit! If women's college
wrestling were folkstyle then Cumberland and Missouri Valley could have their dual meet before the men's meet, at the same location with the same referee with all of the fans understanding what is going on. And, likely bigger crowds that they presently get. Wouldn't it be great if one of the graduate assistants and another assistant at University of Michigan coached the womens team until enough competent women came out of these programs and returned to coach? Maybe the womens team should do both styles until they get established. When you wrestle in Canada, wrestle freestyle, when you wrestle in the USA, wrestle folkstyle. USA Wrestling offers plenty of competition where girls and boys, men and women can compete in freestyle. The NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (which all state HS associations belong to as members) will always use FOLKSTYLE rules, it's time the women's college coaches came on board and allowed their sport the rapid growth that will result in better quality across the board in both styles. Bigger numbers is the key, EASY is the key for administrators, and existing rules in mens college (folkstyle) are easy.
Also, as wrestling people, we are trained for combat. All that money spent on combat in lawsuits versus Title IX and proportionality would have been better spent on reviving wrestling programs around the country. I'll bet not one coach of a men's wrestling program being dropped since 1972 (Title IX year) said to his Athletic Director, "Hey, I know you gotta drop my sport to share the money with women, how about if you drop my men's wrestling team, and let me start a women's wrestling team and I'll still have my wrestling coaching job?" And the money will go to the women. Instead we fought, while the money went to women's lacrosse, field hockey, ice hockey, synchronized swimming, badminton, and bowling. Geez, if those coaches at those 400 dropped mens programs would have started womens wrestling teams, women would have gotten their fair share of the collegiate athletic dollar and 400 coaches would still have college wrestling coaching jobs. I know, ~ know, that's just too simple, but maybe it so simple no one ever thought about it.
