Cataline named Outstanding Wrestler at the Body Bar Women’s FILA Junior Nationals

Jackie Cataline (Corona, Calif./Cataline’s Wildcats), the champion at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Body Bar Women’s FILA Junior Nationals in El Cajon, Calif., April 10.

This competition serves as a World Team Trials at the FILA Junior level. The winners will compete at the Junior World Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania this summer.

An upset occurred when Cataline defeated 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Na’Tasha Umemoto (Portland, Ore./USA Cobra), 3-1, 2-0. It was the second gold medal of the weekend for Cataline, as she was also a champion at the Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals on Saturday.

Four returning FILA Junior champions were able to defend their titles this year.

Sara Fulp-Allen (El Granada, Calif./Menlo College) won for the second straight year at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. She defeated Joey Miller (Woodward, Okla./Oklahoma Bad Girls) in a finals match that went the full three periods. Miller won the first period, 4-4, but Fulp-Allen came beck with 7-0 and 4-0 period victories to take the match.

Dany Hedin (Marquette, Mich./USOEC) captured her second straight title at 55 kg/121 lbs., when she pinned Chelynne Pringle (Hugo, Minn./Minn. Storm), in 2:36.

In a battle of returning champions Heather Martin (Wellington, Ohio/Cumberland College) defeatd Stefenie Shaw (Waterford, Conn./KT Kidz) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs., 2-0, 4-0.
Last year, Martin was the champion at this division, while Shaw was the champion at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Samantha Lang (Tualatin, Ore./Team Oregon) won for the second year in a row at 79.5 kg/175 lbs. Lang captured a three-athlete round-robin, winning both bouts by fall.

The 79.5 kg weight division is not contested in the Junior World Championships, and was added by USA Wrestling. Lang will not be competing on the World Team.

2003 Junior World champion Ali Bernard will get the opportunity to go for a second career Junior World medal, after winning the 72 kg/158.5 lbs. division. She pinned Tabetha Golt (Williamsburg, Ky./Cumberland College) in 1:30. Bernard won her Junior World title at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. two years ago.

Other individual champions were Melissa Gerard (Williamsburg, Ky./Cumberland College at 44 kg/88 lbs., Kapua Torres (Forest Grove, Ore./Pacific Univ.) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., and Suekoilya Shelly (Bedford, Texas/Cumberland College) at 59 kg/130 lbs

Gerard won a three-athlete round-robin, including a 4-4, 1-6, 3-2 win over runner-up Nicole Woody (Odenton, Md./M Tairy Maniacs).
Torres pinned Caitlyn Chase (Hanover Park, Ill./Gator WC). 0:56 in the finals. Torres had three pins during the tournament.

Shelly defeated Deanna Rix (South Berwick, Maine/SMT) in a close finals match, 1-1, 1-0.

It was a good day for athletes from Cumberland College, which had three champions from their college team: Gerard, Shelly and Martin.

Lampe wins Outstanding Wrestler at Body Bar Women’s FILA Cadet

Alyssa Lampe of Tomahawk, Wis., the champion at 46 kg/101.25 lbs, was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Body Bar Women’s FILA Cadet Nationals held in El Cajon, Calif., April 9

The tournament featured the nation’s top 15-17 year old wrestlers competing in freestyle wrestling.

Lampe won a star-studded weight class which featured many past All-Americans and respected competitors. The top five placewinners in the division were each a placewinner at a USA Wrestling National tournament last season.

In the finals, Lampe pinned Cammy Yeik (Bremerton, Wash.), in 1:49. Last year, Lampe was second at the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals. Yeik was third in the USA Wrestling FILA Cadet Nationals in 2004.

In a battle of returning champions competing this year at 70 kg/154.25 lbs.,
Melissa Simmons (Ridgefield, Wash) defeated Sheila McCabe (El Cajon, Calif.), 4-0, 7-0 in the gold-medal match. Last year, McCabe won the tournament at 143 pounds, while Simmons was the champion at 154.25 pounds.

It was a tough day for returning champions, as Simmons was the only one to repeat. Three other returning champions were beaten in the finals.

At 49 kg/108 lbs., Michaela Hutchison (Soldotna, Alaska) beat returning champion Joey Miller (Woodward, Okla.), 2-0, 2-0.

Both were in the national news this year for winning medals at their state high school boys meet. Hutchison was second at the Alaska state tournament, while Miller placed fourth at the Oklahoma state championships.

At 52 kg/114.5 lbs., Tatiana Padilla (La Verne, Calif.) stopped returning champion Nicole Darrow (Lanesboro, Mass.), 2-0, 4-0. Padilla was a champion at the USGWA Folkstyle Nationals a few weeks ago, and claimed her first major freestyle event.

At 60 kg/132.25 lbs., Jackie Cataline (Corona, Calif.) defeated returning champion Cheyenne Stokes (Tulsa, Okla.), 6-0, 2-3, 4-0. In the pool competition, Cataline also defeated last year’s runner-up Sara Peasley (Kimberley, Wis.). It was Cataline’s first major freestyle competition.

Winning the title at 56 kg/123.25 lbs. was Beth Johnson(Garden City, Kan.), who beat Amber Miracle (Berlin, Wis.), 5-0, 6-0 in the finals match. Johnson was a runner-up in the FILA Cadet Nationals last year.

Other individual champions were Amy Whitbeck (Duansburg, N.Y.) at 40 kg/88 lbs.,
Paige Rife (Fowlerville, Mich.) at 65 kg/143.25 lbs. and Rachel Gomez (W. Sacremento, Calif.) at 78 kg/170 lbs. and Brittany Delgado (Fountain Inn, S.C.) at 100 kg/220 lbs.

Whitbeck won a best of three series, beating Amy Bloom, Lebanon, Calif. Bloom won the first match, then Whitbeck won the second bout. Whitbeck won the final bout, 4-3, 6-1.

Rife won a four-athlete pool pool, wining both of her matches. Included was a 50-second pin over Katrina Wilborn, San Diego, Calif., who was the runner-up.

Gomez won a four-athlete pool, winning three matches including a pin over Desiree Memea (Ewa Beach, Hawaii), the runner-up. Gomez pinned all three of her opponents.

Delgado won a best-of-three series over Cassandra Wolpe (Ventura, Calif.) in two straight, defeating her 3-0, 6-0 in the first match and 3-0, 4-0 in the second match.

Felix named Outstanding Wrestler at the Body Bar Women’s University National Championships

After winning the gold medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Laura Felix (Bakersfield, Calif./Cal-State Bakersfield) was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Body Bar Women’s University National Championships

The tournament featured the top female wrestlers who are between 18-24 years old and whose class has graduated high school.

Felix won a five-athlete pool in her division, winning all three of her matches. In the key bout in the round-robin, she stopped Sadie Kaneda (Honolulu, Hawaii/Missouri Valley) in the final bout, 3-0, 5-4.

The only champion able to repeat from last year’s tournament was Megan Goldsmith, (Merillan, Wis./Univ. of Calgary), who won the title at 77 kg/169.5 lbs. for the second straight time. She won a best-of-three series over Alecia McCoy (Marshall, Mo./Missouri Valley) in two straight bouts. She claimed the first match 2-0, and won by pin in the second match in 1:29.

Missouri Valley College, which won the team title, had three individual champions: Brooke Bogren, (Carbondale, Kan../Missouri Valley) at 59 kg/130 lbs., Kelly Branham (Apache Junction, Ariz./Missouri Valley) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and Brittany Jones (Marshall, Mo./Missouri Valley) at 72

Bogren defeated her college teammate Julie Duarte (Baldwin Park, Calif./Missouri Valley) in the finals, 6-0, 7-0. Bogren placed fourth last year at this tournament.

Branham won a three-athlete round-robin, all of which were members of the Missouri Valley College team. Branham was fourth last year at this event.

Jones won a four-athlete pool, with a key win over runner-up Kuu Johnson (Marquette, Mich./USOEC), 3-0, 4-0.

Three U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes won gold medals: 2003 World bronze medalist Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Marcie Van Dusen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Ashley Sword (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Wong beat Kapua Torres (Kahuku, Hawaii./Pacific Univ.), 7-0, 3-1 in the finals bout.

Van Dusen dominated Erica Chew (Houston, Texas/Missouri Valley), 8-0, 6-0 in the gold-medal match.

Sword pinned Rachel Billerbeck (Pflugerville, Texas/Missouri Valley), in 3:19 for her championship title.
