Wrestling: Chiharu Icho to compete at 51 kg for Japan Queens Cup

Wednesday March 16, 7:36 PM

(Kyodo) _ Chiharu Icho, who won the silver medal in the women's 48-kilogram freestyle at the Athens Olympics, will wrestle in the 51-kg weight division at this month's Japan Queens Cup, the Japan Wrestling Federation said Wednesday.
Icho struggled to make weight and opted to fight in the heavier division at the March 25 competition at Tokyo's Komazawa gymnasium.

Ayako Shoda, the rival of Kaori Icho -- Chiharu's younger sister who took gold at 63 kg in Athens -- will drop a weight category and appear at 59 kg.

Olympic gold medalist Saori Yoshida, Kaori Icho and Olympic bronze medalist Kyoko Hamaguchi will compete at their usual weight categories of 55 kg, 63 kg and 72 kg, respectively.

Selections for the national squad for the World Wrestling Championships this fall in Budapest, will be determined based on results of the Japan Queens Cup and the national championships.

Evans-Smith prepares for Nationals

The Daily Journal 3/16/05

UKIAH Ashlee Evans-Smith, a senior wrestler from Ukiah High School, is looking for donations to help her pay her way to the United States Girls Wrestling Championships.

Evans-Smith is hoping to make the trip to Lake Orion, Mich. March 19 and 20 for the competition. Because girls wrestling is not a sanctioned sport at Ukiah High School, the athlete must furnish her own way to the Michigan.

Evans-Smith placed first in the Washington State Championships on March 4, of this year; and then placed first at the Oregon State Championships the next day before taking second place at the California Northern Championships on March 6.

Last year, Evans-Smith placed fourth in her weight class at the national competition. She is looking to do better in her final trip to Nationals of her high school wrestling career.

Anyone wishing to help Evans-Smith on her way to Michigan with a monetary donation may send the donation to Ashlee Evans-Smith, in care Jim Hatfield at Ukiah High School.
