OKLAHOMA CITY - On a historic day at the state wrestling championships, two Woodward athletes earned medals.
Senior Matt Johnson got the silver medal at 160 pounds and freshman Joey Miller was fourth at 103 pounds. Miller was the first female wrestler to compete, win a match and medal at the state championships Saturday in the State Fair Arena.
Cody Rowell of Duncan pinned Johnson with just 21 seconds left in the 160-pound championship match. It was the third state title for Rowell, while Johnson medaled for the third time.
Johnson finished the year with a 40-4 record, including a 1-2 mark against Rowell.
Miller got into the medal round with a 9-0 win over Shane Webb of Noble on Saturday morning.
In the third place match, Miller met Chris Crawford of El Reno for the second time in the tournament and was pinned for the second time. Crawford got the fall in 2:31.
Senior Kevin Branine also qualified for state, but was eliminated on Friday.
