Vallejo tops at Napa Classic

Angara leads girls wrestling squad to tournament title

Times-Herald 1/16/05

Maria Angara led the Vallejo High girls wrestling team, taking the 103-pound weight class title Saturday at the Napa Valley Classic.

Vallejo also took home the team championship, topping second-place Castro Valley by 20 points.

Vallejo's Lauren Knight was second at 138 pounds - in match-of-the-day style - as Knight lost in the final on a pin from a defending state champion.

Also in second place was Liz Bustamante (114), while fellow Apache teammates Jennifer Fernandez (98), Jaime Sage (120), Angie Miller and Monica Gonzalez all placed third and Jennifer Avelino (108) took sixth.

Hogan High's wrestlers were also at the tournament, taking fifth place in the overall team standings. No individual wrestler won an event for the Spartans, but Krystal Alcantara took third place in the 103-pound weight class.

Additionally, Jessica Ortiz took fifth place at 114 pou-nds, and Destiny Nanaoat and Erin Russell took sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 132-pound division. Vanessa Taylor added a seventh-place showing at 160 pounds for the Spartans.

Next week, Hogan hosts the Region II championship meet, where wrestlers and teams can qualify for the state meet. The top six finishers in each weight class will move on.

Wrestling revival in Rochester

By MIKE WHALEY 1/17/05

Assistant Sports Editor

ROCHESTER — Last year the Spaulding High School wrestling team was reduced to four members, the smallest squad in the short history of the program.

That has changed this season as the Red Raiders have 15 wrestlers currently on board and another 20 or more competing with the Rochester Middle School team, which has resurfaced after a five-year hiatus.

"Guys I had last year did most of the recruiting for me," second-year coach John Vaselle said. "Most of them are green and young. We have all freshmen and sophomores and one junior. But we still have 15 kids and they’re staying steady. It’s tough trying to compete at the varsity level; it’s a learning curve."

The one junior is Geoff James, the program’s most experienced wrestler. He was academically ineligible last year, but as a freshman he was good enough to place sixth at the Class L meet and advance to the Match of Champions.

Of the 15 wrestlers, two are girls, Trista Ludlow and Kati James, and Vaselle, who wrestled across the border at Maine’s Noble High School, said they’ve fit in pretty well.

"They’re working hard and doing everything I ask," he said.

This is the first year Spaulding has had girl wrestlers since the ill-fated 1999-2000 season. That year a number of incidents led to the postponement of the Spaulding season on the eve of the Class L championships. Among the incidents was alleged sexual harassment of a female wrestler by a male teammate.

Athletic director Dave Colson said that issue has been discussed and Vasell is aware of the past history and has addressed it with his team.

The middle school team is being coached by Lou Ferullo of Rochester, a current high school wrestling official and former New England champion while at the University of New Hampshire.

Ferullo said there are 24 wrestlers showing up consistently to practice and working hard.

"We want to get it in line to feed the high school program," he said.

Ferullo said most of the kids are new to the sport, although there are two who have wrestled for quite some time. There are two girls on the team.

The team practices four days a week for 90 minutes at the high school. Ferullo added that they are still welcoming aboard any interested candidates.

"We’re starting at the beginning, doing the basics," Ferullo said. "They’re focused and want to learn. What they’ve done is well above my expectations. They’re working hard and they’re committed."

The RMS team will compete in six meets, starting last Friday at Winnacunnet and culminating with the state meet next month.

Ferullo’s position is funded and he said there are funds to cover the costs of away bus trips.

There are still some old warm-up tops and uniform singlets.

The only thing the school had to purchase was 20-plus headgear.

Kids did have to purchase their own wrestling shoes, but that is the only investment.

"We’ve already got the mats, so there’s not much expense," Ferullo added.

"I’m excited to have a program where kids are willing to learn. We need it to get in line with the Timberlanes and the Salems," Ferullo said. "John (Vaselle) has done a good job bring the high school numbers up, and it will get better by keeping the middle school numbers up."

The high school team has met with modest team success, but with the numbers up it means meets will last longer than the five- or 10-minute dual meet debacles of a year ago. At the very least, they can fill in a number of the weight classes and have less forfeits.

"It was important to get the middle school (program) up and running," Colson said. "Lou (Ferullo) brings a lot of expertise to the table. The program is starting to make a comeback."
