Frisco ISD girls programs try to find success, experience

By MONIQUE WALKER / The Dallas Morning News,November 15, 2004

FRISCO – The girls wrestling programs in Frisco ISD are fairly new, but
the coaches are not letting inexperience be an excuse this season.

Frisco coach Chuck Brown reminded his team that its district title last
season should be motivation to reach for more this year.

"The girls need to keep building on what we're doing," Brown said.

Frisco graduated seven seniors and is looking to sophomore Vanessa
Epps, Jessica O'Bannon and Melissa Ikono for leadership. Epps was third in
the region last year and went to state as an alternate at 138 pounds.
Jessica O'Bannon, also a sophomore, and Ikono, a senior, compete at 165 pounds.

After one season, wrestlers like O'Bannon are using practices to
explain moves and remind her teammates of techniques.

"It's a hard transition to ask sophomores to make, but they've
responded to it," Brown said.

At Centennial, coach Mike Eaton is leading the girls into their second
varsity season.Eaton said interest is picking up in the program, and he has nearly
enough wrestlers to compete in every weight class.

Centennial is led by sophomore Sarah Van Allen, who was third at
regionals last year at 110. Others returning include Christina Wall at 128 and
Kirsten Gunia at 110.

Although Centennial is without a senior class, Eaton said several will
benefit next year from three years of varsity experience.

Eaton also encouraged his wrestlers to participate in summer camps.

"We can't say we're not experienced any more," Eaton said. "We have and
we will get better."
